Phosphorescence lifetime imaging in turbid media
In this dissertation we explore the use of highly scattered photons in an analog of conventional emission tomography. Through this technique we quantitatively reconstruct images of the spatial distribution of oxygen in turbid media. We begin with the mathematical description of diffusive light propagation in highly scattering systems and solve the forward problem. Numerical methods by which the forward problem is inverted are introduced next, enabling quantitative spatial image reconstruction. T

H [infinity symbol]/H2/Kalman filtering of linear dynamical systems via variational techniques with
Filtering of linear dynamical systems has historically been accomplished through the application of the Kalman filter. The Kalman filter has a minimum mean squared error type performance for linear systems with stochastic inputs. In practice, the Kalman filter has been adapter for use with systems outside its usual solution set. For example, the extended Kalman filter for nonlinear systems. While the Kalman filter has been rather successful in general, practical applications have found that mode

Peptide-modified polymer for endothelialization
A functionalized polycarbonate material derived from tyrosine containing varyinglevels of free acid functionality along the backbone, poly(DTE-co-X%DT carbonate), hasbeen functionalized with a peptide to promote endothelial cell attachment and evaluatedas a potential synthetic vascular graft material. Lysine derivatives have been produced topromote the attachment of engineered peptides for promoting endothelialization.NMR has been used to analyze the initial structure of the poly(DTEC-co-X%DTC)

Determination of vertical fluxes of sulfur dioxide and dimethyl sulfide in the remote marine atmosph
Vertical fluxes of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were determined by eddy correlation and an isotopic dilution atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometer (APIMS) on an aircraft platform. The sampling frequency of the isotopic dilution APIMS ranged from 1 Hz to 25 Hz for real-time measurements. Measurements were made near the surface in the marine boundary layer to over 6 km in the free troposphere. The APIMS demonstrated an average sensitivity of 80 cps/pptv for DMS and S

Renal, Fall 2007
The major objective of this sequence is for the students to obtain integrated information regarding the structure and function of the renal system, mainly the kidney, by attending lectures and participating in laboratory exercises. By the end of the sequence, we hope that the students will have acquired a working knowledge of: 1) how the various structural components in the kidney are specialized for processing the filtrate and producing urine, 2) what homeostatic mechanisms are involved in the

Microencapsulation for therapeutic applications
Microencapsulation has proved to be a powerful technique in the field of drug delivery. A great deal of research is directed towards studying the use of various microencapsulation systems for that purpose. This study investigates the use of microencapsulation in alginate for protein delivery and delivery of gene therapy products for the treatment of spinal cord injury. Liposomes were encapsulated in alginate to form a drug delivery system which allows for multiple control points for drug release

Essential Science for Teachers: Physical Science: Session 2. The Particle Nature of Matter: Solids,
What simple idea links together all of chemistry and physics? How can a close study of the macroscopic differences among solids, liquids, and gases support a microscopic model of tiny, discrete, and constantly moving particles? In this session, participants learn how the "particle model" can be turned into a powerful tool for generating predictions about the behavior of matter under a wide range of conditions.,The segment provides examples of probing questions to find out if the student recogniz

Biology
The Biology course is a first-year course in biology at the high school level. The course emphasizes a multi-representational approach to algebra, with concepts, results, and problems being expressed graphically, analytically, and verbally. The course uses four themes to organize important concepts throughout the course: science, technology, and society; evolution; the relationship between structure and function; and science as a process.
