Got Energy? Spinning a Food Web
Students learn about energy flow in food webs, including the roles of the sun, producers, consumers and decomposers in the energy cycle. They model a food web and create diagrams of food webs using their own drawings and/or images from nature or wildlife magazines. Students investigate the links between the sun, plants and animals, building their understanding of the web of nutrient dependency and energy transfer.

4.1 The international perspective Earlier in this unit (Section 1) you looked briefly at cross-cultural approaches towards children's play and children's work. In many societies throughout the world it is expected that children, even very young children, will help with the family's work or contribute to the family income. In some societies the separation between the world of the child and the world of the adult is not as stark as in others. This could make us question
1.1 Introduction In many countries play is widely viewed as an effective way in which children learn, and most curriculum outlines or frameworks make some reference to play. There is reason to think, however, that the concerted focus on raising educational standards throughout the UK has resulted in an increased emphasis on adult-led learning and a loss of ground for play as a child-led learning process, particularly in the middle years of childhood (7–11 years). A further aspect highlighted by Peter

The instructor's section of this chapter considers some of the general challenges associated with converting a descriptive laboratory exercise to an inquiry exercise. It also contains the detailed methods of our current version of this animal behavior investigation. The second major section of this chapter contains the current student's version of this exercise. In this section students are led through initial observations of crickets and through the process of hypothesis formation about relatio
The size and shape of a bird's beak is telling of its diet. Bird's beaks are special adaptations to get food and vary according to if the bird eats plants, animals, or seeds.
Most birds make homes called nests. They are built out of twigs, hair, bits of trash, mud, and many other items. Many birds build these nests in tree branches, but they can also be built on the ground or on buildings such as rooftops.
Birds have different feathers that work together to allow the bird to fly. These feathers occasionally fall out of the bird's feather coat. These feathers last a very long time after the bird has died and humans have used them for writing and crafts in the past.

Filmed in extreme desert conditions 'Event Horizon' looks at a landscape interrupted and transformed by visible signs of heat. The waviness blurs objects and figures, creating a mirage effect and rendering familiar objects unrecognizable. The work takes place in near silence, with the sound of wind dominating the score. The work is approximately seven and one-half minutes in length. Produced and directed by Bil Viola.
