This lecture forms part of the "Time and global state" topic in the Distributed Web Systems module.
Bangladesh Water- Teaching Swimming, Saving Lives
In Bangladesh - innovative programs combine supervised child care and low-cost swim instruction to combat deaths by drowning, which UNICEF calls the biggest cause of mortality in Bangladesh for children between the ages of 1 and 17. Reporting by the Pulitzer Center's Jon Sawyer.
Water Conductivity Measurement in Flowing Water
Short video introducing and illustrating the measurement of water conductivity in flowing water. Aimed at students without previous field experience of measuring the physical environment in water.
Water Quality Measurement in Standing Water
Short video introducing and illustrating the measurement of water quality in standing water such as lakes and ponds. Aimed at students without previous field experience of measuring the physical environment in water.
Inequities In Health: A Global Perspective
Inequalities in health are: “Differences in the prevalence or incidence of health problems between individual people of higher and lower socio-economic status”. Inequities in health are these differences but articulated as being preventable, unjust and wrong. This presentation gives a global perspective of these inequalities.
Sea water, maritime transportation and environment
These files outline a general introduction to a joint view of maritime transportation of chemicals, chemistry and the environment. They include study material and self evaluation tests, which could be covered in 5 hours. This material is suitable for 1st year undergraduate students enrolled in Nautical or Maritime Engineering Studies, and also for a general audience.

TALAT Lecture 5102: Reactivity of the Aluminium Surface in Aqueous Solutions
This lecture provides better understanding of the electrochemistry of aluminium; it gives an introduction to the other lectures. Some knowledge in aluminium metallurgy, simple chemistry (thermodynamics and kinetics), electricity and general electrochemistry is assumed.
Dual-phase steel water quenched from 750°C
Dual phase steel annealed at 750°C for 5mins and then water quenched to room temperature. The microstructures revealed that the carbides are not dissolved at this low intercritical temperature and some undissolved pearlite lamallae can still be observed. Austenite is visible at grain boundaries and the martensite has been tinted by the application of second tint-etch. Martensite appears straw-coloured. Some M-A constituents can be clearly seen by the application of this step-etching technique.
Dual-phase steel water quenched from 800°C
The steel sample with composition same as above was quenched from 800°C. The microstructure shows higher volume fraction of martensite. The martensite is appearing as the same straw-coloured entities. The straw tint is not influenced either by martensite size or its C-content. The retained austenite is appearing as bright white fine particles associated mostly with martensite.
Dual-phase steel water quenched from 775°C
Same steel when quenched from 775°C. Carbides cannot be seen anymore. The microstructure is essentially martensite and ferrite. Some retained austenite can be seen as white small particles which are brighter than the background ferrite. Retained austenite measured using XRD was 3%. The step-etching technique has resulted in straw-coloured martensite, white austenite and the off-white ferrite at the background.
Jominy end quench test: transfer of a steel sample from furnace to water jet
Video of the transferral of a steel specimen from furnace to water jet during a jominy end quench test. The steel is held in a furnace to austenitise the microstructure at around 900° C. It is then transferred to the quenching machine where a water jet is sprayed onto the bottom of the specimen until the specimen is cool. Contemporary French culture in a global context
This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file.
As taught in Semester two 2009.
This module looks at aspects of contemporary French culture in the context of an increasingly globalised culture and economy. In part, the module explores recent attempts to defend, redefine and interpret key aspects of French identity and culture as a means of negotiating ways of living in an era of globalisation and changing social structures.
The module focuses on aspects of eve
