John Wilkes Booth was born May 10, 1838 in Bel Air, Maryland. At age 17, he made his acting debut. In the 1850s, he joined the No-Nothing Party. During the Civil War, he was a Confederate secret agent. In March of 1865, his attempt to kidnap President Lincoln failed. On April 14, 1865, he assassinated Lincoln at Ford Theater. Dr. Charles Johnston is a 1949 Humanities graduate of McMaster University, and he is a Professor Emeritus of History at McMaster University. From 1965 to 1970, he was a member of the Archaeological and Historic Sites Board of Ontario. He is the author of a two volume history of McMaster University and E.C.
