11.3 Frequency selectivity
Hearing is a familiar and important human sense that is a topic naturally of interest to those who are curious about human biology. This unit will enable you to relate what you read to your own sensory experiences – and indeed many of the questions asked have exactly that function. This unit will be best understood by those with some biological understanding.

PediNeuroLogic Exam: 2 1/2 Years Old: Motor/Reflexes - Deep Tendon Reflexes
This segment of the exam illustrates the problems associated with obtaining deep tendon reflexes. The reflex hammer is turned into a horse and initially she allows the examiner to test the right upper extremity. Notice that after testing for the brachioradialis reflex she becomes uncooperative. One of the ways to reduce apprehension in the child is to place your thumb or index finger over the tendon to be examined and tap on it rather than directly tapping on the child's tendon. It's less threat
PediNeuroLogic Exam: 18 Month Old: Normal: Fine Motor/Coordination - Drawing/Scribbling
An 18 month old child can hold a pen and imitates scribbling or can scribble spontaneously. At this age he is holding the pen between the thumb and first 3 fingers and is developing a tripod position of the hand for drawing. A neuroscience tutorial focusing on those aspects of the pediatric neurological examination that are unique to the child's nervous system, with an emphasis on important neurodevelopmental milestones.

Optimal Organism Design and Costs for Not Being Perfect
Optimal means the best, but organisms often solve multiple problems so any one problem is not solved best. An optimal function is produced for sugar ingestion rates versus sucrose concentration through butterfly proboscides and pipets by humans. A choice experiment is performed using probing by a butterfly proboscis toward one of two concentrations of sucrose. A non-optimal system is then studied: cylindrical container designs by businesses where surface area (cost) is least when height equals d
