TALAT Lecture 2203: Structural materials fabrication
This lecture gives a brief introduction into the basic fabrication methods for structural aluminium alloy materials with respect to machining, forming, joining and surface treatments as a necessary background for the design process; it describes the subject of welding structural aluminium alloys in order to understand the materials requirements which the designer has to take into account when designing load carrying welded aluminium structures. General materials engineering background is assumed
TALAT Lecture 2201.01: State of the Art
This lecture gives an introduction into use of aluminium in stressed applications, with examples of the past experiences and likely future developments. A general engineering background is an advantage but the subject matter is suitable for most audiences concerned with transport and structural applications.

This lecture offers an example of product development. It imparts knowledge about different ways of casting aluminium and criteria for selecting casting methods; the heat treatment of aluminium; corrosion-proofing and surface treatment of cast alloys used in a saline environment and choice of alloy. It provides insight into how to develop a product using the general specificiations and the interaction between form, material and processing chain and ?the importance of being thoroughly familiar wi
TALAT Lecture 2102.02: An Upper Casing for an Automobile Steering Column, Special Study: Impact Extr
This lecture offers an example of product development. It imparts knowledge about cold forging of aluminium and choice of alloy. It provides insight into how to develop a product using the general specifications and the interaction between form, material and processing chain and the importance of being thoroughly familiar with the different design materials, their processing possibilities and properties. The lecture is recommended for those situations, where a brief, general background informati
TALAT Lecture 2101.02: The product development process
This lecture provides a brief introduction to the product development process and systematic design. It aims at generating interest in and a common understanding of the product development process; telling about the basic principles and terminology used in connection with systematic design in order to facilitate the use of the four product design examples presented in this course (see TALAT lectures 2102.01 - .04). The lecture is recommended for those situations, where a brief, general backgrou
TALAT Lecture 1100.01: Introduction: Aluminium, a Light Metal
This lecture provides basic information about the history of aluminium, the principles behind the production of primary metal, environmental properties, potential applications, areas of application. The lecture is recommended for those situations, where a brief, general background information about aluminium is needed as an introduction of other subject areas of aluminium application technologies. This lecture is part of the self-contained course "Aluminium in Product Development", which is trea
Introduction
The term ?Intelligenz Vuilding? is not any longer a mere slogan used by smart salesmen of commercial and / or office buildings. During recent years it has come to describe a broad engineering concept for building design, construcions and operation, the realization of which challenges architects and engineers involved in the various aspects of building industry. The concept empasizes a multidisciplinary effort to integrate and potimize the building strctures, systems , services and management in
Injection-moulded protractor
The colours in the image are the result of birefringence and relate to the residual strain in the polystyrene. The pattern of strain is indicative of the flow of material during the injection process and it highlights the injection point (at 152 degrees on the outer scale), and two 'weld lines' (at 338 and on the central bar) where two distinct flows of material meet. The weld line is a common point of failure because there is limited intermixing of the two fronts during the time allowed.
Experiments as Modus Operandi
Architecture has for too long focused on the presentation of pristine objects and the presentation in drawing form. A critical understanding of the field, however, necessitates a reevaluation of the roles of the process involved in the production of building. Rather than emphasizing surface appearances, an architecture rooted in process aims ultimately at revealing the fundamental and deep structures inherent within the making of architecture. One of the primary tasks of the process is to provok
Interface boundary between h-BN and Si3N4 grains
The micrograph shows a regularly stepped interface boundary between h-BN (precipitate) and Si3N4 grains (within a silicon nitride particulate-reinforced silicon carbide composite). The occurrence of BN inclusions results from the introduction of colloidal BN into the hot isostatic pressing process. They are formed from B2O3 present as a thin surface film on the BN particles in the barrier layer. B2O3 will be molten during the pressing process and will diffuse rapidly into the powder compact and

Delamination cracks in h-BN particles.
h-BN particles were subjected to compressive stress in the (0001) planes (within a silicon nitride particulate-reinforced silicon carbide composite). The occurrence of BN inclusions results from the introduction of colloidal BN into the hot isostatic pressing process. They are formed from B2O3 present as a thin surface film on the BN particles in the barrier layer. B2O3 will be molten during the pressing process and will diffuse rapidly into the powder compact and react with Si3N4 to form BN. Su

Applying object-oriented analysis to the integration of design and construction
This paper implements an Object Oriented Analysis technique to model information related to design and construction. In a previous study, an approach to integrate design and construction processes based upon information analysis and modelling has been proposed. By breaking down the project's vast information into groups of related information, construction related problems have been identified and then traced back too their relevant design processes. This paper models this process using a relati
The Changing Image of the City
The image and structure of a town are constantly subject to a dynamic process of change and continuity. Visual material, such as photographs, historical maps, town plans, drawings and prints, show us the impact of these changes on the image of a town. The main point of departure of this study stems from the question of how this process of change and continuity is visually detectable in a town or city. The fact that the ideas about the appearance of a city (gradually) change, can be read from the
Didactic Design: light and optics for preschool level
Since 2003, we have been developing a pedagogic proposal and didactic material for teaching Light and Optics to kindergarden children that enhances the construction of the first scientific thinking schemes. The design (industrial and graphic) applied to this project has generated an educational product composed of 44 objects. These materials allow teaching concepts such as: combination of colors, light indispensable to see, formation of shadows and images are not objects. These have been develop
