Base Ten Blocks - Exploring Whole Decimal Numbers - Virtual Manipulative
This program is pretty easy and intuitive to use. As you can see from the panel below, the colored blocks on the left are the manipulatives which can be clicked on to magically make new blocks. These blocks can then be dragged into the working area. There is no limit as to how many blocks you can make and move around. The three blocks used by this program are the standard blocks used in the physical version of the base 10 blocks.

Elgar Cello Concerto, 1st mvmt played by Yo-Yo Ma
This concerto was composed in 1919 and is considered to be a conersone of cello repetoire. This is a live 1997 performance of Yo-Yo Ma with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on stage at Carnegie Hall. Their is a brief, narrated introduction at the beginning.
Water, Water Everywhere...
This is a good beginning of the year lesson to review fractions, decimals, geometry (the number of degrees in a circle and drawing a circle with a protractor), graphing, and metric measurement. This lesson is a good way for students to meet their peers while working cooperatively in a task-oriented group. The watermelon you will be using for the activity is also a good start-of-the-year treat. Be sure to get an extra watermelon or two to share at the end of the activity.
