1.017 Computing and Data Analysis for Environmental Applications (MIT)
This subject is a computer-oriented introduction to probability and data analysis. It is designed to give students the knowledge and practical experience they need to interpret lab and field data. Basic probability concepts are introduced at the outset because they provide a systematic way to describe uncertainty. They form the basis for the analysis of quantitative data in science and engineering. The MATLAB® programming language is used to perform virtual experiments and to analyze real-wo

The main aim of this section is to give you practice in reading, interpreting and drawing a variety of graphs created for many different purposes. You will need graph paper for this section.

Graphs occur in all sorts of different contexts and applications. Graphical representations can be used to show profiles of height plotted against distance for sections of the Peak District walk, for example. This section looks at three sorts of graphs: time-series graphs, conversion graphs and mathe

1 Introduction to the course

Scientists are increasingly being asked to discuss and communicate social and ethical issues that arise from their work. Understanding these issues is also part of developing science and technology responsibly. And yet the formal education system in the UK often requires scientists to focus on core science subjects at the expense of learning about the social and ethical implications of their work. How then does a modern scientist begin to engage with these important issues? One solution is to

2.7.4 Change notification sites

These sites are a variation on link checking sites. Here, the customer is notified not when a web document becomes unavailable, but when the document is changed. For example, the customer might be interested in a particular page which advertises some holiday package offers to a particular destination and wants to keep abreast of any changes to the page which might signal the fact that a new improved offer has been added.

5.6 Stages of an Executive Bill

To provide a flavour of the consideration of Bills, we will now look at the stages of an Executive Bill.

One of the unique features of the Scottish Parliament is its openness. There are processes for wide consultation, an open evidence process at committees, the ability of the public and interested parties to liaise directly with MSPs, and the ability to lobby for amendments to a Bill. For all these things the Scottish Parliament has received international recognition.
