Ever wondered how a computer processes data into information? This unit will help you to understand the distinction between the two and examines how a computer-based society impacts on daily life. You will learn what computers can do with data to produce information and how computers can be used to work with data and search for it, control machines, and support commercial operations.
Essays on Wage Inequality: the Role of Composition, Immigration and the Cost-of-living
This thesis focuses on the role of composition, immigration and the cost-of-living on wage inequality. I begin by investigating to what extent changing characteristics of the labour force can help explain the fact that residual or within-group wage inequality –wage dispersion among workers with the same education and experience- is generally thought to account for most of the growth in wage inequality observed in several industrialised countries over the last thirty years. I compare
Scientific Pioneers: Benjamin Franklin

View of the vertical stratification of microhabitats in the Mojave desert
The microhabitats within the desert habitat vary by soil type and micro climate. These differences account for the different types of vegetation in each microhabitat.

5.3 Social institutions Of course, the extent of agreement about meaning can be highly variable: from the ephemeral (a certain style of clothing may come to stand for a shared attitude among a small group of teenagers for a short period) to the more profound (such as the idea of ‘a market’ or ‘marriage’). Sociologists refer to these more profound shared meanings as institutions. In this sense, an institution is a persistently reproduced social pattern that is relatively self-sustaining. Howe

ࡁn introduction to our solar system: the planets, our Sun and our Moon. Students begin by learning the history and engineering of space travel. They make simple rockets to acquire a basic understanding Newton's third law of motion. They explore energy transfer concepts and use renewable solar energy for cooking. They see how engineers design tools, equipment and spacecraft to go where it is too far and too dangerous for humans. They explore the Earth's water cycle, and gravity as applied to or
"Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies, Fall 2007"

Linear function graph display
An interactive applet that allows the user to graphically explore the properties of a linear functions. Specifically, it is designed to foster an intuitive understanding of the effects of changing the two coefficients in the function y=ax+b. The applet shows a large graph of a quadratic (ax + b) and has two slider controls, one each for the coefficients a and b. As the sliders are moved, the graph is redrawn in real time illustrating the effects of these variations. Applet can be enlarged to ful
The Scientific Method: An Introduction Using Reaction Time
Reaction time has many advantages for the introduction of the scientific method--the subject is familiar, many experiments are possible, and students enjoy competition. In our Introductory Biology courses, our students formulate and test a hypothesis about reaction time. We use Kosinski's Reaction Time software, that records reaction times and then analyzes them statistically using the chi-square median test. Students then write a paper that either rejects or fails to reject their null hypothesi
