This micrograph shows the grain structure of a roll-bonded aluminium alloy diffusion couple annealed for 60 minutes at 600°C. The upper half of the couple is Al-0.5Fe-1.0Mn (wt.%), the lower half is Al-1.0Si (wt.%). Annealing has recrystallised the microstructure. The Al-Fe-Mn alloy has many intermetallic particles (the dark phase). This sample was homogenised at 800 °C and quenched rapidly to retain supersaturated metastable β grains. With quenching there is insufficient time for diffusion to occur resulting in a metastable structure.

Martensite is a metastable supersaturated solid solution of C in steel. The excess carbon atoms sufficiently strain the matrix to produce a b.c.t (body centred tetragonal) structure. In order to minimise interfacial strain between the parent austenite and the transforming martensite the martensites assume a lath or needle shape.
Bi 60, Cd 40 (wt%), eutectic alloy
This sample has the eutectic composition so all the liquid solidifies at the eutectic temperature to form a lamellar eutectic structure. The two phases grow co-operatively from the melt.

The boundary length is then minimised, subject to the constraint of constant area.
