11.333 Urban Design Seminar (MIT)
This course is a requirement for completion of the Urban Design Certificate Program. It investigates the complex nature of 'successful' urban design and attempts to identify and evaluate examples of urban design that are at the leading edge of practice, anticipating the future. The seminar will deal with two parallel questions: what are the key trends that will shape the future form and function of cities, and how will these changes affect the role of the urban designer? The first part of the se
9.18 Developmental Neurobiology (MIT)
This course considers molecular control of neural specification, formation of neuronal connections, construction of neural systems, and the contributions of experience to shaping brain structure and function. Topics include: neural induction and pattern formation, cell lineage and fate determination, neuronal migration, axon guidance, synapse formation and stabilization, activity-dependent development and critical periods, development of behavior.
Communication in the Implementation of a Metacognitive Strategy for Learning to Design
This paper describes an instructional communication strategy that makes use of time-based media techniques (story boarding and animation) in order to empower design studios with means to promote their students? awareness on the acquisition of metacognitive knowledge and skills. This paper highlights the importance of including the communication of the design processes in the evaluation of learning outcomes. Moreover, the paper proposes that the students should be made constantly aware of their d

NOTES ON IN-SITU ? FULL-SCALE EXPERIMENTATION AND THE DESIGN PROFESSIONS
In the north american academic context a workshop is different from a paper session in that it is simply an opportunity to exchange ideas and to raise questions among colleagues who can bring to bear in their discussion various points of view and experiences otherwise unavailable.
Cu 55, Zn 45 (wt%) brass, as cast, dendritic
A cast alloy of high zinc brass, consisting of β dendrites. The α precipitates out of solution at the crystal boundaries, forming a structure of β dendrites surrounded by α. This is known as a Widmanstätten structure because a geometrical pattern of α forms on certain crystallographic orientations of the β lattice.

Silal
This sample shows the typical structure of silal, irons with high Si content (5.5-7.9 wt%). It is a grey cast iron alloyed with 4-6wt% Si to provide good oxidation resistance. The high Si content forms a dense, adherent iron silicate surface film, which is resistant to oxygen penetration. The flake graphite iron Silal was one of the first heat resisting cast irons developed. Spheroidal graphite Si irons have higher strength and improved ductility. The structure shows cored dendrites of ferrite w
Roll-bonded aluminium alloy diffusion couple in the as-rolled condition.
This micrograph shows the grain structure of a roll-bonded aluminium alloy diffusion couple in the as-rolled condition. The upper half of the couple is Al-0.5Fe-1.0Mn (wt.%), the lower half is Al-1.0Si (wt.%). Rolling heavily deforms the microstructure, producing thin, elongated grains parallel to the roll-bonded interface. The Barker's etch produces a thick oxide layer on the grains of aluminium (anodising). When viewed in cross-polarised light, interference in the oxide layer produces colours w

Roll-bonded aluminium alloy diffusion couple annealed for 60 minutes at 600°C.
This micrograph shows the grain structure of a roll-bonded aluminium alloy diffusion couple annealed for 60 minutes at 600°C. The upper half of the couple is Al-0.5Fe-1.0Mn (wt.%), the lower half is Al-1.0Si (wt.%). Annealing has recrystallised the microstructure. The Al-Fe-Mn alloy has many intermetallic particles (the dark phase). These help create recrystallisation nuclei, hence this alloy has a high density of small grains relative to the Al-Si alloy. The Barker's etch produces a thick oxide
Tools of Expression: Notation and Interaction for Design Computation
Design considers function, fabrication, and aesthetics collectively. Computation is beginning to affect the competitive dynamics of design. Using algorithms, designers are exploring forms that are essentially ?undrawable,? even with advanced modeling and direct manipulation techniques. Determining the appropriate functional characteristics may require the application of increasingly complex structural- and environmental-performance analysis techniques. To realize physically a design may require
ARMY WAR GAME SIMULATION (AWAS) system - Utilising architectural knowledge in virtual environments
This research briefly examines the importance of collaborative design in developing a multi-user, multi-tiered, networked and real-time information base system. Aspects such as navigation, interaction, communication, movements (objects or virtual camera), control, level of details, spatial design and virtual spaces will be explained to show their importance in the development of virtual world. This paper will further explore the aspects of collaborative design in the context of Army War Game Sim
As-cast wrought-grade aluminium alloy
The micrograph shows Al-Mg-Fe-Si containing < 1wt.% of each solute. Addition of TiB2 particles facilitates the formation of a fine, equiaxed grain structure (grain refinement). This micrograph illustrates one of the possible growth morphologies that a solidifying metal can adopt (c.f. micrograph 711). The grains in this structure exhibit no dendritic branching, i.e. the solid-liquid interfaces of the growing grains are smooth. When a solid grain is growing from the liquid phase, it will initiall
Da Representa??o ? Modelagem (From Representation Towards Modeling)
This work intends to structure a conceptual and technical referential to guide the development of the ?Post-Graduate Drawing Course - from traditional tracing to computer graphics? (DTGC-IFM,UFPel, RS, Brasil), related to the process of using the computer technology for problem-solving in graphics representation. The referential intends to evaluate the level of development, and also orientate the investments with qualification of the staff, hardware and software. This study refers only to the pr
