Diagonals of a rectangle
A web page and interactive applet show how to compute the length of the diagonals of a rectangle. A rectangle is shown that can be resized by dragging its vertices. As you drag, the diagonals are continuously recalculated. Text on the page explains calculation. For those who prefer it, in a formula that is given. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference interactive geometry reference book project at htt

Galaxy-Quasar Associations: Is the Big Bang Bung?
When we see a galaxy and a quasar near each other in the sky, it might be because they are really near each other, or it might be that they are far apart and just along the same line of sight. Tests performed by Alan Stockton (Astrophysical Journal 223:747-757, "The Nature of QSO Redshifts", 1978) on a sample of such pairs have shown that some galaxy-quasar pairs have the same redshift and so are accepted as being at the same distance. Other pairs with very different redshifts however have been
Urban Signatures: Sensible Heat Flux (WMS)
Big cities influence the environment around them. For example, urban areas are typically warmer than their surroundings. Cities are strikingly visible in computer models that simulate the Earths land surface. This visualization shows sensible heat flux predicted by the Land Information System (LIS) for a day in June 2001. Sensible heat flux is higher in the cities--that is, they transfer more heat to the atmosphere--because the surface there is warmer than in the surroundings. Only part of the g
