The City of Walls: Constantinople
The world owes much of its cultural legacy to Constantinople’s walls. When Constantinople was under siege by neighboring enemies, the Roman city’s elaborate system of moats, outer walls, and inner walls stood tall. Surviving numerous fire attacks, the walls were eventually brought down by more modern tools of warfare, but, thankfully, classical culture survived. (04:17)
6.2 Opting out
This last section of the unit contains, I think, some of the most challenging science that you have met so far. Take it slowly, translating all the abbreviations in your head as you come to them (read BAT as ‘brown adipose tissue’, for example) and looking carefully at the graph in Author(s):
1.10 Subtraction of decimal numbers
Subtraction of numbers can be used to answer questions such as ‘what's the difference between two values?’ or ‘if something has decreased by a certain amount, what's its new value?’ Subtraction can also be thought of as undoing the process of addition. For instance, instead of saying ‘£10 take away £7.85 leaves how much?’ you could say, ‘what do I have to add to £7.85 to get back to £10?’
6.3 Chemical formulas
By using symbols, elements can be represented much more conveniently and much more briefly. This method of using symbols can be extended to compounds. You will now look further into this idea using a very familiar compound: water. Recall which atoms there are in a water molecule.
3.5.3 Mechano-electrical transduction is rapid
Many other sensory receptors, such as photoreceptors and olfactory neurons, employ second messengers in the transduction process. This is not true for hair cells. The rapidity with which they respond makes this impossible. In order to deal with the frequencies of biologically relevant stimuli, transduction must be rapid. The highest frequency humans can hear is about 20 000 Hz. This in effect means that hair cells must be able to turn current on and off 20 000 times per second (200 000 tim
