The College of Charleston selected "The Known World" by Edward P. Jones as its 2011 The College Reads! book selection. Jones was on campus for a public reading week and book talk on November 1, 2011. He remained on campus on November 2 to engage with students, faculty and staff.

Despite having a rare form of cancer and undergoing invasive chemotherapy treatments, Mindy Lahey Hughston had a never-quit attitude that included her studies at Missouri State University-West Plains. She graduated in 2008 with an associate's degree in nursing and went on to work in labor and delivery.
Mindy continued giving to and serving others until her death in 2010. A high-tech classroom in Looney Hall, the home of health programs at Missouri State-West Plains, has been named in her honor
