2.4 Using search engines Search engines can be very good at finding information since they cover such a huge number of web pages. Unfortunately it can be difficult to find the one you want in the huge number of hits that they return. I can illustrate some of the problems, and some of the strategies you can use to overcome them, with an example. Let's assume a friend of yours, Jill, has heard you talking about ‘Living with the Net’ and is trying to find out more about the course. What problems might Jill fac
2.2 Browsing for information on the Web One way to find what you are looking for on the Web is to start from sites that you know are likely to have useful ‘links’ on them, like the main Open University pages or the Open University Library pages. These opening pages are known as home pages and are a bit like the contents page of a book. The home page usually gives you some information about the content of the website, often with links to other pages of information held on that site and on sites elsewhere. By clicking on a link â
Method 1 First of all, do some of the relaxation exercises we have described above. Then imagine yourself in this calm state taking the exam. You feel purposeful and confident. You see yourself at a desk in the exam room environment. You feel entirely at home and attuned to that moment, working effectively and concentrating well. Now practise visualising this positive, clear, realistic image over and over again.
1.3 Studying the arts and humanities Having seen why and how distinctions are made between different arts and humanities subjects, does that mean we cannot think of these subjects ‘as a whole’? The general label ‘arts and humanities’ suggests that there is something that unites them, at the same time distinguishing them from other subject groupings (such as ‘the sciences’ or ‘social sciences’). What unites these subjects is that they focus on: cultural ‘traditions’
Learning outcomes After studying this unit: you will learn how to reflect on your mathematical history and existing skills, set up strategies to cope with mathematics and assess which areas need improving; through instruction, worked examples and practice activities, you will gain an understanding of the following mathematical concepts: reflecting on mathematics, reading articles for mathematical information, making sense of data,
4.3 Formats OpenLearn units can be downloaded or taken away in several formats: Print Format Unit Content XML Unit Content RSS OU XML Package IMS Content Package IMS Common Cartridge Plain Zip Moodle Backup At the asset level the major formats you will find are: text in XML or PDF animation
4.2 Content The content on OpenLearn comprises both the unit (structured self-study resources) as well as the individual assets which make up a unit. The assets of a unit are the materials such as text, images, animations, audio clips, etc., which are likely to be in different digital formats. In some cases a unit will consist of just one asset, but most contain a variety. As the amount of material in both OpenLearn and OpenLearn Works grows, so does the
variety of the units available. Howeve
4.1 Sources of material You will probably be making an OER in an area in which you have some expertise so
you are likely to already have lesson plans and resources that you use in your
face-to-face work that will be invaluable to others. As well as your own materials, you might like to look at a range of other OER
repositories in addition to OpenLearn. 3.7 Features of speech: language in real life In our discussion of dysfluency, we specifically avoided the use of the word ‘error’. In the past, because written grammar was used to judge speech, common features of speech were judged as errors because they do not occur in the more planned environment of written text. Thus what type of data is analysed is crucial to what the grammatical findings are. We said earlier that grammar descriptions were increasingly being developed on the basis of examining how language is really used. Learning outcomes After you have studied this unit you should be able to: describe the key features of behaviourist, social learning, constructivist and social constructivist theories of development; evaluate critically these four theories; illustrate their application to practical issues in child development.
