6.253 Convex Analysis and Optimization (MIT)
This course will focus on fundamental subjects in (deterministic) optimization, connected through the themes of convexity, geometric multipliers, and duality. The aim is to develop the core analytical and computational issues of continuous optimization, duality, and saddle point theory using a handful of unifying principles that can be easily visualized and readily understood.
The mathematical theory of convex sets and functions will be central, and will allow an intuitive, highly visual, geomet

Life in an Indian Slum - Shantaram author Gregory David Roberts - Part 1 Author Gregory David Roberts escaped from prison in Australia and began a new life living in a slum in Mumbai, India. His semi-autobiographical novel Shantaram about his experiences there has become a bestseller.
Assignment work from David James I have to say I really enjoyed this assignment. Researching sales and publishing figures for the children's and young adult book market has been very interesting. I'm looking forward to doing Part II of this introductory session. Out of curiosity - are other people working through these 'intro' sessions in order (like me)? Or are you doing the ones you find personally interesting first? Dave

Neuron Creations
Developed for third grade. Students will begin by being given a mini-lesson on the neuron itself. Then, in the actual activity, students will discover a fun, hands-on project where they learn about the neuron, an essential part of the human body. Each student will be given a piece of clay with which they will be able to form their own neuron. After they have created a neuron, the teacher will guide the students in labeling the various parts of the neuron as well as teach about each individual fu

This video is accompanied by text. "The beginning of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented American prosperity and power. The economic and social environment was perfect for the rise of the International Darwinism movement. Followers of this movement applied some of the fundamental views of Darwin’s Origin of Species (1859) to international politics. They believed that the earth belonged to the strong, and with America quickly growing in strength, there was a strong surge of supp
To develop lifelong learning skills, we argue that students need to learn how to learn via inquiry and understand the sociocognitive and metacognitive processes that are involved. We illustrate how software could play a central role in enabling students to develop such expertise. Our hypothesis is that sociocognitive systems, such as those needed for collaborative inquiry and reflective learning, can best be understood as a community of interacting agents, who each have expertise in accomplishin
As the presence of spring grows stronger, many people's thoughts drift towards their yards and gardens. The websites assembled below provide resources for, and information about, different aspects of gardening and landscaping. Although the pop-up ads are a little intense at the first site (1), persistent navigating will pay off because The Gardener's Network website offers a wealth of information about a variety of subjects including extensive sections on Flowers, Vegetables, House plants, Lawn
Two approaches to building intelligent tutoring systems are the well-established model-tracing paradigm and the relatively newer constraint-based paradigm. Proponents of the constraint-based paradigm claim that it affords performance at levels comparable to that of model-tracing tutors, but with significantly less development effort. We have built both a model-tracing and constraint-based tutor for the same problem domain (statistical hypothesis testing) and report on our findings with the goals
This study examines the effects of pictures of screen captures and input devices on documentation for older novices. There was no main effect of pictures, but there were statistically significant interactions between the type of picture and the factors of age and computer experience. As predicted, the most optimized designs—the ones presenting screen captures—moderated the negative effects of age. We argue that screen captures help reduce two problems in the cognitive area that are especially
