Special Lecture 03
Economics of Entrepreneurship
Course Objective: To give students: (a) An understanding of the concepts of and differences between entrepreneurship and capitalism; (b) An appreciation for how innovations occur and how they impact market capitalism.
A hive of social activity: where French entrepreneurs benefit from collective intelligence
Behind the doors at no. 84 rue de Jemmapes along St Martin’s Canal in Paris, social entrepreneurs are busy working on their own and with one another to find ‘innovative solutions’ aimed at bringing about change in society.
“We wanted to create a collective workspace where social entrepreneurs could meet and exchange best practices and ideas,” says Charlotte Hochman, co-founder and co-ordinator of La Ruche, or ‘The Beehive’ in English. “It is open to anyone proposing an i
Interactive Animation on the Macintosh II
The efficiency of images in communication between humans has so far been used almost exclusively by TV and other mass medias. The costs have been too great to encourage the use of images in the financially restricted everyday practice of architecture. With a range of application programs for the Apple Macintosh II the vision has come close to reality. It is now possible to create guided walks with the chance to choose different routes and views in a model of buildings and surroundings in 256 col
Can simulations in VE support architects in solving complex design problems?
Building design is facing development of industrialization of the production on the one hand and more complex 'One of a Kind' products on the other. This will be for rebuilding of a large stock of existing buildings and what can be left to new production. In both cases the results of the design process have to be solid to guarantee a successful product. In both cases an integrated and careful design process is absolutely crucial. The demands on the built environment make the systems of buildings
TALAT Lecture 3502: Impact Extrusion Processes
This lecture describes the impact extrusion processes as well as the forces and deformations acting on the tools and work-piece in order to give insight into the relation between part design, process and tooling. Basic knowledge about the formability of metals and background in mechanical engineering is assumed.
TALAT Lecture 3503: Finishing and other Supplementary Operations
This lecture describes supplementary fabrication measures for impact extruded parts and gives some examples of finished impacts. Basic knowledge about the formability of metals and background in mechanical engineering is assumed.
TALAT Lecture 3504: Impact Extrusion Design Aspects and Properties
This lecture describes the forms and shapes which can be fabricated by impact extrusion; it points out limiting factors in the freedom of design of impacts; it helps to learn about the factors affecting tolerances and surface roughness of impacts. Basic knowledge about the formability of metals and background in mechanical engineering is assumed.
TALAT Lecture 3505: Tools for Impact Extrusion
This lecture provides knowledge about design philosophy and tool materials for impact tools, which are a cost factor and eminently important for successful impact extrusion. Basic knowledge about the formability of metals and background in mechanical engineering is assumed.
Over There: Martha Farnsworth and WWI
Martha Farnsworth was a prolific diary writer, recording her daily experiences from 1882 through 1922 with only minor gaps. Martha , with some assistance from her second husband Fred taught a Sunday School class of boys at the first Christian Church in Topeka. Martha taught the same boys year in and year out and these boys became their family. Martha recorded the impact of World War I on her life and on these young men, a number of whom served in WWI. This podcast will feature entries from

The McCanns and the Media
The McCanns were the biggest media story of 2007. This event goes behind the headlines to ask why it became a media obsession, whether information or entertainment triumphed, and what impact the coverage has as the case continues.

David Goodhart is editor of Prospect. John Keane is professor of politics at the University of Westminster and at the Wissenschaftszentrum, Berlin. Bhikhu Parekh is professor of political philosophy, University of Westminster.
The Post American World
Global power is shifting, and wealth and power are bubbling up in unexpected places. Fareed Zakaria considers not so much the decline of America, but the impact of the rise of "the rest". This transition of power will redefine America's role as the arbiter of the world's political, economic, and cultural issues and force it to accommodate new heavyweights. Zakaria offers an illuminating view of our increasingly complicated future, the growing influence of rapidly developing nations, and how thes
