Evidence Matters: Towards informed professionalism in education
The resource is a CfBT publication that is focused upon the way in which knowledge about educational practice is produced and put to use. The paper examines the recent impact of research evidence on educational policy and practice, and presents recommendations for more effective structures and relationships in the future. A case is made for the transference of ways of working from other fields in which there is a continued interface between the research task and the practice setting.
Taking control: how teachers use research
This 2004 PRE-Online article draws on the findings of a National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) report, to identify the barriers preventing teachers from using research to inform their practice, as well as to highlight some of the ways Local Authorities have helped to remove these. The project also examined the barriers to accessing, engaging with, carrying out and sharing research, as well as evincing why teachers should be interested in using it.
Assessing Quality in Applied and Practice-based Educational Research
This ‘Framework for Discussion’ originated from an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project whose remit was to examine in a critical and informed fashion the different definitions of and approaches to applied and practice-based research. UK ITE Network for Education Sustainable Development/Global Citizenship Annual Conference
On July 9th the UK ITE Network for Education Sustainable Development/Global Citizenship held their annual conference at the Keyworth Centre, London South Bank University. Physical education in schools 2005/08: Working towards 2012 and beyond
The Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links strategy (PESSCL) was the focus of an evaluation between September 2005 and July 2008 in a small sample of primary and secondary schools in England. These schools were visited by HMI and additional inspectors over the three year period to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of PESSCL in practice, in terms of achievement, provision and leadership, with a view to outlining what the focus of attention should be by 2012 and beyond.

Improving primary teachers' subject knowledge across the curriculum
This report summarises the evidence from inspectors of Ofsted’s subject survey programme during 2007/8 on the quality of teaching across the primary curriculum in all subjects. It excludes English and mathematics, but includes religious education, PSHE and citizenship. It focuses on aspects of good practice in teaching these non-core subjects and identifies good subject knowledge as a key factor in securing effective teaching and learning.

This Sci-tutors article provides an insight into a constructivist approach to learning and teaching; the teacher is a very important facilitator of the learning process. A framework of learning through talking and doing, through reading and through writing is provided, together with suggestions for assignment activities for trainee teachers that could be adapted for use in particular contexts. In addition, there is a brief introduction to learning theory including the work of Ausubel and Bruner.
Gathering data
Professor Jerry Wellington provides a commentary on a sample chapter on data gathering from 'Action Research for Improving Educational Practice' by Valsa Koshy. When it comes to data, should we talk about gathering, collecting, creating, acquiring, harvesting or nurturing? Koshy uses the term ‘gathering' data is if it were unproblematic. This is one of the weaknesses of this chapter, but it has many strengths and will be valuable for anyone embarking on a research project in their own setting,
