Are well-designed Web sites efficient for learning mathematics at the undergraduate level?
We conducted an experiment in order to examine the effectiveness of an educational Web site, which provides resources to undergraduate students in mathematics. The participants' task was to solve 18 questions about differential equations. Students in the paper condition outperformed those in Web site conditions. There was no difference between the original and an improved Web site version. Moreover, students in all conditions preferred working with the paper resource. Practical and theoretical i
Learning Design Engines as Remote Control to Learning Support Environments.
Context: Chapter 5 of the Learning Design book describes the operational model of a learning design engine based on the concept of finite automata with output alphabet. We rely on this event concept to include pre-existing learning tools in flexibe and rich learning designs. Contribution: We sketch an approach for the integration of complex learning environments in learning designs. Interactive learning support environments, such as argumentation or modelling tools are pre-existent and have a hi
Quantitative and Qualitative Research: Conflicting Paradigms or Perfect Partners?
This paper will examine the use of quantitative and qualitative methods as complementary research methods. It asks the fundamental question wether these two approaches can be used jointly in a principled manner. The pressure in educational research has been towards using the two methods alongside each other. In applied research the use of the two approaches in the same project is accepted yet we still find serious objections raised to such work when it is presented in a more formal context. Eval
Applying Competence Structures for Peer Tutor Recommendations in CSCL Environments.
Competence structures of the content and competence modelling of the learners provide well-suitable means for finding appropriate peer tutors in CSCL based on asynchronous messaging and annotations. Various criteria for the appropriateness of potential peer tutors can be discussed. An internet-based system used as a large scale Web experiment can then also deliver data for evaluating such criteria.
Networked Management Learning for Managers of Small and Medium Enterprises
This paper argues that networked management learning might have specific relevance for SME management development since this model recognizes the importance of social relations and the associated relational dialogue that underpin knowledge and innovation in specific business contexts. Indeed NML reinforces the centrality of networking entrepreneurs and other relevant actors at the local level to increase the effectiveness of their actions and also helps integrate the different components of the
Social capital and productivity: how might training affect a company’s social capital? does the li
The ultimate purpose of this literature review, carried out by Liam Aspin as part of the TLRP Phase 3 Project Adult Basic Skills and Workplace Learning (dir. Alison Wolf and Karen Evans 2003-2008) was to answer the following questions: How might training affect a company’s ‘social capital’? Does the literature indicate how this might happen, and whether we might expect a significant impact on productivity? Can these effects be measured? In order to answer these questions, we attempted to
The role of awareness in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy at key stage 2
Our starting point is that explicit understanding of key concepts will promote children’s progress in literacy. We argue that this depends on their teachers having explicit knowledge of the concepts which is translated into teaching practice. These ideas are explored in the context of the teaching of morphology and reading comprehension in 50 London primary schools. In our first study, teacher’s explicit awareness and practice of morphology and reading comprehension strategies are documented
The benefits to employers of raising workforce basic skills levels: a review of the literature
This paper summarises the literature on the benefits which employers derive from raising the basic skills levels of the workforce. Because the evidence on basic skills in the workplace is still quite sparse, the review also covers the benefits to individuals of improving basic skills and looks at the literature on the benefits of training for employers, and employees, more generally. The aims of the literature review were to review and synthesise the existing literature on the economic and wide
Interim Report - Early Career Learning: Nursing Sector
This report describes some of the data obtained from newly qualified nurses about their learning and development in their first posts. It covers the first two years of a four-year project and includes data from the nurses’ preceptors/mentors and managers. The main themes have been selected from these data in order to facilitate the next ‘action’ phase of the research. This forms part of a project that also involves engineers and accountants in their first posts and reports are also being p
The Early Years Transition and Special Educational Needs (EYTSEN) Project: Technical Paper 1 - Speci
The Early Years Transitions and Special Educational Needs (EYTSEN) project builds on the work of the Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) project, a major longitudinal study of a national sample of young children’s progress and development through pre-school and into primary school until the end of Key Stage 1 (age 3+ to 7 years) (Sylva et al., 1999). Both the EPPE and EYTSEN research studies are funded by the DfES. The EYTSEN study explores evidence of possible special educatio
