Accidental Discoveries
The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (1963) of the Cold War lead to the launching of several satellites to detect nuclear energy blasts. Satellites did detect blasts, not from the earth or our moon as expected, but from random places all over the sky. In 1960, University of Washington professor Belding Scribner and his team collaborated to save the lives of countless patients affected by end-stage kidney disease with the invention of the Scribner Shunt.
