The Viking Age Scotland and the Irish Sea Provinces
Viking warriors from Scandinavia began to attack the coasts of western Europe towards the end of the eighth century. Christian writers registered their shock and horror at these raids by pagans upon monasteries, churches and royal sites. The raiders were mobile, using highly manoeuvrable light-weight sailing ships, which could also be rowed. Radically optimistic
Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi, says that the world has changed dramatically in the last 12 months. It is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. Irwin on the Great Depression and the Gold Standard
Douglas Irwin of Dartmouth College talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the role the gold standard played in the Great Depression. Irwin argues that France systematically accumulated large amounts of gold in the late 1920s and 1930s, imposing massive deflation on the rest of the world. Drawing on a recent paper of his, Irwin argues that France's role in worldwide deflation was greater than that of the United States and played a significant role in the economic contraction that followed.
