Understanding the Equity Premium Puzzle
Professor Constantanides is one of the most prominent and creative research scholars in the field of financial economics, in particular of theories of asset and derivatives pricing. He will present theoretical and empirical research on three classes of generalizations of the standard neoclassical model and will discuss their contribution towards a better understanding of equity risk premium.
3.2 Negative freedom The concept of negative freedom centres on freedom from interference. This type of account of freedom is usually put forward in response to the following sort of question: What is the area within which the subject – a person or group of persons – is or should be left to do or be what he is able to do or be, without interference by other persons? (Berlin (1969), pp. 121–2; see, p. 155) 3.4 The misuse of the concept of positive liberty One of the main claims that Berlin makes in ‘Two Concepts of Liberty’ is a historical one. It is that positive theories of freedom, or perversions of them, have been more frequently used as instruments of oppression than have negative ones. These positive theories typically rely on a split between a ‘higher’ and a ‘lower’ self, or between a ‘rational’ and an ‘empirical’ self as Berlin sometimes puts it. Coercion is justified on the grounds that it Freitag, 26. SBR elastomer, for example (Table 1), based on 24 wt% styrene monomer shows better mechanical properties and better resistance to degradation than polybutadiene alone. By increasing the styrene content to 35 per cent, a high hysteresis (energy absorbing) material ideal for tyre tread

Observation, measurement and the recording of data are central activities in science. Speculation and the development of new theories are crucial as well, but ultimately the predictions resulting from those theories have to be tested against what actually happens and this can only be done by making further measurements. Whether measurements are made using simple instruments such as rulers and thermometers, or involve sophisticated devices such as electron microscopes or lasers, there are decisio

Theories and policy practices associated with war and international security have, for the most part, been a masculine domain. Women have stereotypically been associated with peace, and Women's Studies as an academic discipline has tended to stay away from these issues. This lecture will offer some explanations as to why this is the case and suggest some ways in which feminists in the discipline of International Relations have begun to bridge this divide and offer us some new ways to understand
In Part 2 of a three part series, philosopher Charles Taylor explores more adequate theories of secularization.
Clifford Winston of the Brookings Institution talks about the ideas in his book, Market Failure vs. Government Failure, with EconTalk host Russ Roberts. Winston summarizes a large literature on antitrust, safety regulation and environmental regulation. He finds that government regulation often fails to meet its objectives. While markets are imperfect, so is government. Winston argues that idealized theories of government intervention based on textbook theories of market failure are not the way r
