Patricia Collins, Assistant Professor of the Practice at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley, discusses the importance of learning-by-doing. The learn-by-doing method permits students to take classroom lessons and immediately apply them on-the-job. Make-A-Bot is a small DIY additive fabricator ("3d printer") using the fused deposition / fused filament fabrication principle. It uses commercial open-source components from Makerbot Industries with custom mechanics and construction. The machine chassis is waterjet-cut aluminum and the pedestal and electronics cabinet are 6mm laser-cut acrylic.
