Internet Scout Project
"...bioterrorism thrives on public fear." Dr. Ralph R. Frerichs of the UCLA School of Public Health maintains this Web site to educate students, the public, and health professionals about the public health impact of bioterrorism. The site offers links to recent articles about the public health threat of biological weapons and information about various diseases associated with possible biological weapons, including anthrax, smallpox, botulism and others. Unless you are a UCLA student, most viewer
Effects of pictures, age and experience on learning to use a computer program
This study examines the effects of pictures of screen captures and input devices on documentation for older novices. There was no main effect of pictures, but there were statistically significant interactions between the type of picture and the factors of age and computer experience. As predicted, the most optimized designsthe ones presenting screen capturesmoderated the negative effects of age. We argue that screen captures help reduce two problems in the cognitive area that are especially

21M.301 Harmony and Counterpoint I (MIT)
In this subject we will study the basic harmonic, melodic, and formal practices of western music, principally the classical music of central Europe during the eighteenth century. Topics will include diatonic harmony, simple counterpoint in two parts, and tones of figuration. The coursework will combine composition, listening, analysis, and work in sight-singing and keyboard musicianship.
Chrom. and Electrophoresis experiments with PDFs
A site with PDF links to several slab gel electrophoresis, HPLC, and GC experiments intended for high school or college audiences. This site may provide a useful starting point for faculty seeking to implement new laboratory experiments based on these techniques. A login (email address) is required, but once logged in, follow the "Free Resources" link to see many instrumental and analytical experiments that have been submitted to the site.
Knowledge Acquisition 2
Knowledge Acquisition 2 covers protocol analysis and advantages and disadvantages of knowledge acquisition
The Probability Pipe Organ
This site provides a Java-based simulation that uses a random number generator to demonstrate the principles of probability.
Web Analysis and Design - Build
This reading material forms part of the "Build" topic in the Web Analysis and Design module.
DNA microarray analysis is one of the fastest-growing new technologies in the field of genetic research. Scientists are using DNA microarrays to investigate everything from cancer to pest control. Now you can do your own DNA microarray experiment! Here you will use a DNA microarray to investigate the differences between a healthy cell and a cancer cell.
Bioinformatic Insights Into Mammalian Gene Regulation: Can Keystrokes Confront Cancer?
Dr. Laura Elnitski, Head of the Genomic Functional Analysis Section, Genome Technology Branch NHGRI/NIHDr. Elnitski uses experimental and Bioinformatic methods to discover non-coding functional elements in the human genome. On 7 March 2008, Dr. Elnitski came to MSU-Bozeman to participate in the Women In Bioinformatics Seminar Series.
Keeping a Genetics Field Journal
By keeping a field journal, kids gain insight into local wildlife and the role of genetics in this OLogy activity. The activity begins by telling kids that scientists learn about animals by observing them and by analyzing DNA. They then are given directions for how to keep a field journal that tracks the appearance and behavior of an animal of their choice. Kids are asked to write down any questions they have about the animal that could be answered with DNA analysis. The activity includes a samp
Structured Systems Analysis - Structured Charts
This example forms part of the "Structured Charts" topic in the Structured Systems Analysis module.
Biomechatronics is a contraction of biomechanics and mechatronics. In this course the function and coordination of the human motion apparatus is the central focus, and the design of assistive devices for the support of the function of the motion apparatus. Study Goals: The student must be able to: 1. Make a Problem Analysis of a given assignment in the field of the human motion apparatus and its interaction with an assistive device ; Identify the underlying cause [pathology] of the problem as p
Lessons from Hurricane Katrina: Can We Save California's Delta?
Lessons from Hurricane Katrina: Can we save California's Delta? Raymond B. Seed, Professor of GeoEngineering, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering The catastrophic flooding of New Orleans during hurricane Katrina was the single most costly failure of an engineered system in history. It was also a social and cultural tragedy of unprecedented peacetime proportions for the United States. After the disaster, a team of leading experts from across the country examined the engineering and
Global Warming: A Time to Act (Cap & Trade Conference)
U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein describes her legislative program to combat climate change and responds to questions. Senator Dianne Feinstein is introduced by Boalt Hall School of Law Dean Christopher Edley at the "Cap and Trade as a Tool for Climate Change Policy" conference. Leading practitioners and academic experts from the US, Europe, China and India debated key legal, economic, and technology issues associated with "cap and trade" as a policy tool for California, the US and the internation

Dynamic Learning Agents and Enhanced Presence on the Grid
Human Learning on the Grid will be based on the synergies between advanced software and Human agents. These synergies will be possible to the extent that conversational protocols among Agents, human and/or artificial ones, can be adapted to the ambitious goal of dynamically generating services for human learning. In the paper we highlight how conversations may procure learning both in human and in artificial Agents. The STROBE model for communicating Agents and its current evolutions shows how
Social Capital and the Distribution of Household Income in the United States: 1980, 1990, and 2000
Social capital is a person or group's sympathy or sense of obligation for another person or group. The objects of sympathetic feelings have social capital. Those holding sympathetic feelings for others provide social capital. Because social capital providers internalize the consequences of their choices, they trade with each other on different terms and at different levels that would occur in arm's length transactions, all other things equal. But changes in the terms and level of trade al
