Hendrik Lenstra, University of Leiden: "Escher and the Droste Effect" - April 3, 2007
In 1956 the Dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher made an unusual lithograph with the title "Print Gallery." It shows a young man viewing a print in an exhibition gallery. Among the buidlings depicted on the print, he sees paradoxically the very same gallery that he is standing in. A lot is known about the way in which Escher made his lithograph. It is not nearly as well known that it contains a hidden "Droste effect," or infinite repetition; but this is brought to light by a mathematical analysis o
ESD.72 Engineering Risk-Benefit Analysis (MIT)
ERBA (ESD.72) emphasizes three methodologies - reliability and probabilistic risk assessment (RPRA), decision analysis (DA), and cost-benefit analysis (CBA). In this class, the issues of interest are: the risks associated with large engineering projects such as nuclear power reactors, the International Space Station, and critical infrastructures; the development of new products; the design of processes and operations with environmental externalities; and infrastructure renewal projects.
ESD.34 System Architecture (MIT)
This course covers principles and methods for technical System Architecture. It presents a synthetic view including: the resolution of ambiguity to identify system goals and boundaries; the creative process of mapping form to function; and the analysis of complexity and methods of decomposition and re-integration. Industrial speakers and faculty present examples from various industries. Heuristic and formal methods are presented. Restricted to SDM (System Design and Management) students.
Genetic Analysis - Images
The Genetic Analysis SBLi is a set of scenarios designed to support an undergraduate course in Genetics. In the scenarios the student plays the role of a genetics researcher, and performs simulated experiments to reinforce concepts taught in lectures. This project is part of the the Higher Education Academy's UK Centre for Bioscience Open Educational Resources programme. This package contains images used within the Scenarios.
Virtual laboratories in Molecular and Cell Biology - SDS-PAGE
A protein analysis laboratory using SDS-PAGE, western-blotting and endoprotease digestion. The programme includes a section on the theory of the techniques, a video demonstration in a real laboratory, and a series of questions which guide the students through the structural analysis of model proteins (3 are included). Students go to the virtual laboratory and devise their own experiments in order to determine the molecular weight, subunit composition etc of the proteins. Results (gels and blots)
Using a PDA - Gateshead - Student produced clip 2 - Pdas for Forensic data collection Clip 2 of a set of 3 student produced clips from the Gateshead Molenet Project “Supporting Science in the Field”. ND Applied science (Forensic) visit the Newcastle College Aviation Academy and use mobile devices to collect evidence from a plane, the lab analysis results are then stored on PDAs.

Prepare working solutions
This resource covers the skills and knowledge that will assist the learner, as a Laboratory Technician, to prepare working solutions and check that existing stock solutions are suitable for use. It contains activities and resources to facilitate self-paced learning. Topics include: prepare working solutions, check existing stock solutions, check solution using titrimetric analysis and make up a solution.
Apply local risk control processes
This learning object addresses the competency required to successfully identify and manage risk in a mining workplace. Topics include hazard identification, safety procedures, regulations, responsibilities and the creation of job safety analysis forms.
Present and explain property reports - PRDRE22A
You're going to help a client find the perfect investment property, which means you have some property inspections to do and reports to write. Youll inspect two properties and identify the building style, construction type, current and projected market value, defects, enhancement measures to improve each property's value, preventive measures to protect property and cost benefits analysis for carrying out improvements to each property.
Monitor Stock and Environmental Conditions
This unit covers the knowledge and processes involved in monitoring stock health in the aquaculture industry. Activity 1 gives an introduction to water quality factors such as dissolved oxygen levels, pH, hardness, alkalinity, water temperature and salinity, and how these affect stock and other water quality factors. Activity 2 covers the location to take a water sample, methods of taking a water sample, sending it for analysis and interpreting results of water analysis.
Monitor work operations
This learning object addresses the competency required to oversee and monitor the quality of day-to-day work operations in the Tourism or Hospitality enterprise. You will learn about quality assurance, managing organisational change, workflow analysis, maintaining records, workflow planning, delegation and problem solving.
Co-ordinate Marketing Activities
The key elements addressed in this competency are: Plan marketing and promotional activities, Co-ordinate participation in trade and consumer shows, Co-ordinate in house promotions, Co-ordinate familiarisations, Undertake a general public relations role, Develop special products to meet customer needs and Review and report on promotional activities
18.103 Fourier Analysis - Theory and Applications (MIT)
18.103 picks up where 18.100B (Analysis I) left off. Topics covered include the theory of the Lebesgue integral with applications to probability, Fourier series, and Fourier integrals.
2.003 Modeling Dynamics and Control I (MIT)
This course is the first of a two term sequence in modeling, analysis and control of dynamic systems. The various topics covered are as follows: mechanical translation, uniaxial rotation, electrical circuits and their coupling via levers, gears and electro-mechanical devices, analytical and computational solution of linear differential equations, state-determined systems, Laplace transforms, transfer functions, frequency response, Bode plots, vibrations, modal analysis, open- and closed-loop con
17.405 Seminar on Politics and Conflict in the Middle East (MIT)
This course focuses on evolution of contemporary politics and economics. The subject is divided into four parts: Context: historical and strategic perspectives, theoretical issues, and sources and forms of conflict; Continuity: detailed analysis conflicts systems and their persistence, as well as regional competition and recent wars – focusing on specific countries and cases; Complexity: highlighting situation specific strategic gains and losses; and Convergence: focusing future co
HST.951J Medical Decision Support (MIT)
This course presents the main concepts of decision analysis, artificial intelligence and predictive model construction and evaluation in the specific context of medical applications. It emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of using these methods in real-world systems and provides hands-on experience. Its technical focus is on decision support, knowledge-based systems (qualitative and quantitative), learning systems (including logistic regression, classification trees, neural networks, rou
