Performance through character development
Students will use the creative elements of character analysis and improvisation to develop a character for performance. While this unit's theme is the development of characters for performance, its overarching goal is to provide French immersion students with the opportunity to extend their discourse and further develop their speaking skills. This unit does not cover articulation or pronunciation exercises. For this reason these elements of performance are not being evaluated in the unit assessm
Logic & Proofs
This is an introductory course designed for students from a broad range of disciplines, from mathematics and computer science to drama and creative writing. The highly interactive presentation makes it possible for any student to master the material. Concise multimedia lectures introduce each chapter; they discuss, in detail, the central notions and techniques presented in the text, but also articulate and motivate the learning objectives for each chapter. Topics Covered: The notions of statem
This course introduces students to the basic concepts, logic, and issues involved in statistical reasoning. Major topics include exploratory data analysis, an introduction to research methods, probability, and statistical inference. The objectives of this course are to give students confidence in manipulating and drawing conclusions from data and provide them with a critical framework for evaluating study designs and results. An important feature of the course is the use of an intelligent tutori
Empirical Research Methods
Regression analysis is an enormously popular and powerful tool, used ubiquitously in the social and behavioral sciences. Most courses on the subject immediately dive into the mathematical aspects of the subject and illustrate the technique on problems that are already highly structured. As a result, most students come away with little idea of the wide range of problems to which regression analysis can be applied and how to represent those problems in a way that cleverly utilizes readily availabl
The Introductory Economics course is a collection of online experiments and related on-line workbooks which can be used by individual learners or to supplement an instructor lead course. In each experiment a student is an active participant attempting to make deals with other traders in a market. After each experiment, the data the students generated is stored and the student will use this data to complete an online workbook. The workbook guides the student through the analysis and much of the e
"Revitalizing Urban Main Streets: St. Claude Avenue, New Orleans, Spring 2009"
" This course focuses on the physical and economic renewal of urban neighborhood Main Streets by combining classroom work with an applied class project. The course content covers four broad areas: An overview of the causes for urban business district decline, the challenges faced in revitalization and the type of revitalization strategies employed, The physical and economic development planning tools used to understand and assess urban Main Streets from physical design and economic developme
"Environmental Engineering Masters of Engineering Project, Fall 2007"
"This class is one of the core requirements for the Environmental Masters of Engineering program, in conjunction with 1.133 Masters of Engineering Concepts of Engineering Practice. It is designed to teach about environmental engineering through the use of case studies, computer software tools, and seminars from industrial experts. Case studies provide the basis for group projects as well as individual theses. Recent 1.782 projects include the MMR Superfund site on Cape Cod, appropriate wastewate
This course covered the mathematical topics most directly related to computer science. Topics included: logic, relations, functions, basic set theory, countability and counting arguments, proof techniques, mathematical induction, graph theory, combinatorics, discrete probability, recursion, recurrence relations, and number theory. Emphasis will be placed on providing a context for the application of the mathematics within computer science. The analysis of algorithms requires the ability to count
Focuses on modeling, quantification, and analysis of uncertainty by teaching random variables, simple random processes and their probability distributions, Markov processes, limit theorems, elements of statistical inference, and decision making under uncertainty. This course extends the discrete probability learned in the discrete math class. It focuses on actual applications, and places little emphasis on proofs. The design of algorithms is studied, according to methodology and application. Methodologies include: divide and conquer, dynamic programming, and greedy strategies. Applications involve: sorting, ordering and searching, graph algorithms, geometric algorithms, mathematical (number theory, algebra and linear algebra) algorithms, and string matching algorithms. Analysis of algorithms is studied - worst case, average case, and amortized - with an emphasis on the close connection between the time co
Reading, vocabulary: The mobile phone
You practice reading comprehension and vocabulary by means of a text about using a mobile phone and recycling.
To listen, speak: Those Telefonnummer von Herrn Brockhaus is
In this lesson you will learn to ask people for telephone/fax/email details. You will learn to write down and pronounce telephone and fax numbers as well.
Wrong Turn: A Sympathetic Critique of the Civil Rights Movement
This book argues that the antidiscrimination laws should be repudiated and repealed, without allowing the reintroduction of Jim Crow rules, rules mandating segregation (de jure) and discrimination. It will turn out that the same principles which forbid Jim Crow law prohibit antidiscrimination law. Towards the end of our analysis, this book examines an overlooked arena which offers considerable promise in combating racism: etiquette. We badly need to develop rules of etiquette appropriate for th
Swan songs series
Swansongs is a series of 10 contemporary ‘landscape’ photographs depicting the aftermath of the end of industrialisation in the East End of London. As with some previous work, the photographs relate directly to historical paintings, in this case artists from the British Landscape tradition including John Constable and the Pre-Raphaelites. The thematic concerns and formal properties (including bright colour saturation) are recast into contemporary East London but aim to go beyond a literal re

CEPIAH, a method for Evaluation and Design of Pedagogical Hypermedia
We are working on a method, called CEPIAH. We propose a web based system used to help teachers to design multimedia documents and to evaluate their prototypes. Our tool integrates two modules such as EMPI (Evaluation of Multimedia Pedagogical and Interactive software), and SP/UL/FC, a method for designing pedagogical hypermedia. The EMPI module is used to evaluate multimedia software used in educational context. We structured a knowledge base composed of a list of evaluation criteria, grouped th
