FinsForOERv3 : fin spreadsheet
This spreadsheet has been written to help students explore the thermal behaviour of a single extended surface - i.e. a fin. In this spreadsheet the fin is assumed to be of uniform cross sectional area, have uniform thermal properties and be exposed to a uniform and constant convective heat transfer coefficient. The fin is considered to be in steady-state and all conductive heat transfer is one dimensional.
The spreadsheet is not intended to take away the need for students to understand the go

STS.467 Research Seminar in Deep Sea Archaeology (MIT)
STS.467 examines the intellectual foundations of archaeology in the deep sea. The course explores the current convergence of oceanography, archaeology, and engineering which allows scientists to discover, survey, and excavate shipwrecks in deep water with robots and submarines. The course seeks to address the following questions: How are new devices best employed for archaeological work? How do new capabilities (e.g. higher frequencies, higher resolution, all digital data output) change operatio

Collaborative Multi-professional Narrative Based e-learning. An application to teaching Medical Stat
The present paper describes e-CNA (e-Collaborative Narrative Analysis), a web based multi-agent environment where different agents contribute to the exploration and social co-construction of the meanings of a set of narratives. The paper also describes an action-research e-learning experiment aimed to involve the students of different courses and a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals in a blended online educational project on qualitative and quantitative research methodologies in hea
Supporting Technology-enhanced Learning through Semi-automatic Detection and Management of Skill and
A paradigm shift from a knowledge to a competence society is going on, which also becomes increasingly important for educational and vocational training purposes. Skills and competences are employed to describe learning content, students capabilities, learning processes, and the like. Creating descriptions of skills and competences and assigning them manually is usually an exhausting task. Thus technology-enhanced support is needed. This paper presents a solution approach which enables both th
Towards a multidimensional model for learning objects and learners
This paper presents a multi-dimensional learning style model and a system specification to automatically generate adaptive courses using the aspect oriented technique.
Section Hands Working on the Railroad
A crew of seven section hands are standing with a handcar on the tracks with the Spiceland train depot in the distance. The men are in their shirtsleeves, baggy pants with suspenders, and hats. The man standing on the extreme right is Joseph Seward.
The Accommodation Reflex
This three minute video describes and animates the events taking place in the eye during accommodation. Narration describes the events. Three dimensional animation shows convergence of the eyes. The view changes to a cut-away view of the eye interior to show pupillary constriction and changes in the shape of the lens.
The Divergence of the Bottom Billion
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which track poverty among 5 billion people, miss the key future challenge for development policy. This is that around 50 countries, now at the bottom of the world economy, are economically stagnant and so are diverging from the rest of mankind at an accelerating rate. The lecture analyzes why these countries, with around a billion people, are diverging - why globalization generates both convergence for most of the developing world and divergence at the bo

Open celled aluminium foam produced by infiltration of sintered salt
This is an inexpensive route for the production of open celled foams. It allows a high degree of control over cell size and shape, and results in relatively uniform morphology. The interconnectivity of pores can be controlled by varying the degree of sintering of the precursor.
Coarse open celled aluminium foam produced by infiltration of sintered salt (FOAM-U-LIKE)
FOAM-U-LIKE (Foaming of aluminium metal using lightly interconnected kevelled elements) is a very inexpensive route for the production of coarse open celled foams. It allows a reasonable degree of control over cell size and shape, and results in relatively uniform morphology. The interconnectivity of pores can be controlled by varying the degree of sintering of the precursor. In this case, grains of 1-4mm diameter have been sintered at 600 degrees C for just 10 minutes, giving rise to lightly
FORMGRIP closed cell aluminium foam
Additions such as SiC are made to molten aluminium or aluminium alloy to modify the melt viscosity and make it suitable for foaming. 1 to 3 wt% of pre-oxidised titanium hydride is then added to the melt which is solidified to form a precursor which can be foamed in a controlled manner by a subsequent heat treatment. The resulting foam has a relatively fine and uniform cell structure.
