The effect of collaborative knowledge modeling at a distance on performance and on learning
This study examines the effect of co-elaborating a knowledge model in dyads at a distance on performance and on learning. Forty-eight adults participated in the study. Participants were trained to re-represent knowledge taken from a text, using an object-typed knowledge modeling editor software tool. Knowledge modeling is similar to concept mapping, except that the former is based on a typology of knowledge objects and a typology of links, and that the structure of the knowledge representation i
Socio-cultural Perspectives on Object-oriented Learning
One of the central objectives of project COOL is to explore critical aspects associated with learning (and teaching) object-oriented concepts. This objective will be pursued by bringing forth the heritage of Kristen Nygaard and the Norwegian approach to object-orientation. The project will develop learning material based on this work and intends to make the material available to the object-oriented community in the form of reusable learning objects. This paper explores how social-cultural theori
Report on literature on mobile learning, science and collaborative acitivity

Enforcing Cooperative Storytelling: First Studies
In this paper, we describe the first prototype of a system called StoryTable, aimed at supporting a group of children in the activity of storytelling. The system is based on a special multi-user touchable device (the MERL DiamondTouch) and it was designed with the purpose of enforcing collaboration between children. The paper discusses how the main design choices were influenced by the paradigm of cooperative learning and presents two observational studies to assess the effects of the different
A Plug-In Architecture for Graph Based Collaborative Modeling Systems
This paper presents ongoing work on a graphical modeling and discussion support system. One of the properties of the presented approach is that it tries to implement a "collaborative mind tool" approach, bridging the gap between a communication means and a system with AI functionality. The paper also points out the XML based plug-in mechanism of the system and illustrates it by several categorized examples.
Grounding is not shared understanding : distinguishing grounding at an utterance and knowledge leve
This paper argues that for the study and facilitation of collaborative learning, existing theories of grounding such as that of Clark and Shaefer cannot be applied without adjustments. When comparing collaborative learning and conversation, four dimensions can be identified where grounding at a knowledge level differs from the grounding at an utterance level. Firstly, the indirect access and the existence of a range of manifest meanings, poses the need for a notion of groundedness'. Second

This is an experiment showing the application of affinity chromatography to the separation of albumin from horse serum. A brief introduction of affinity chromatography and how it is being used in this specific experiment is given. This appears to be a good experiment to show the advantages of affinity chromatography in separating specific proteins from a complex matrix and would be useful in a biochemistry course or a course that is specifically looking at differing types of chromatography.
This electronic textbook on statistics provides both extensive and in depth coverage of statistics. Although an excellent reference for analytical chemistry students and faculty, the lack of chemistry-related practice problems or exercises may not make it an appropriate substitute for a traditional text.
The essence of industrial design engineering (IDE) is designing and improving products which are used daily and intensively, at home or at work. The faculty is committed to study, innovate and improve the development of durable products and their services for people, on the basis of the balanced interests of users, industry, society and the environment. The faculty pursues this mission through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates human aspects - i.e. ergonomics, market, organisation and
