MRI Safety Grand Challenge
This module was written for a first year accelerated or AP physics class. It is intended to provide hands on activities to teach end of the year electricity and magnetism topics including the magnetic force, magnetic moments and torque, the Biot-Savart law, Ampere's Law, and Faraday's Law. During the module, students utilize these scientific concepts to solve the following problem: A nearby hospital has just installed a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging facility, which has the capacity to make a th
The Benefits of Biodiversity
First, students toss coins to determine what traits a set of mouse parents possess, such as fur color, body size, heat tolerance, and running speed. Next they use coin tossing to determine the traits a mouse pup born to these parents possesses. These physical features are then compared to features that would be most adaptive in several different environmental conditions. Finally, students consider what would happen to the mouse offspring if those environmental conditions were to change: which mi
Digestive System
The digestive system is amazing: it takes the foods we eat and breaks them into smaller components that our body can use for energy, cell repair and growth. This lesson introduces students to the main parts of the digestive system and how they interact. In addition, students learn about some of the challenges astronauts face when trying to eat in outer space.
Lasers, Let's Find 'Em!
Students research particular types of lasers and find examples of how they are used in technology today. Teams present their findings by means of PowerPoint presentations, videos or brochures. The class takes notes on the presentations using a provided handout. This activity prepares students for the "go public" phase of the legacy cycle in which they solve the grand challenge by designing and producing a laser-based security system.
Ocean Planet: Map of Flight Path

TRMM Tropical Microwave Imager (TMI) sees the power of Hurricane Jeanne On September 25, 2004
NASAs TRMM spacecraft is used by meteorologists to understand Hurricane Jeanne. TRMM saw this view of Hurricane Jeanne on September 25, 2004, just before it made landfall. The cloud cover is taken by TRMMs Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS). It looks underneath of the storms clouds to reveal the underlying rain structure. Blue represents areas with at least 0.25 inches of rain per hour. Green shows at least 0.5 inches of rain per hour. Yellow is at least 1.0 inches of rain and red is at least 2
