Jeff Gold Inaugural Lecture - The Leader's Conundrum or 'You cannot lift yourself up by your own shi
The aim of the lecture will be to do demonstrate the need to challenge continuing traditional images of leaders, often depicted at the apex of things, on top of a hill or at the centre of a complex web of activity. I will argue that those nominated as leaders MUST become aware of what I will call the leader's conundrum and complement their inspiration with 99 x perspiration. To appreciate this call, attendees to the lecture as respectfully asked to do the following just before the lecture: a.

21W.765J Interactive and Non-Linear Narrative: Theory and Practice (MIT)
This course covers techniques of creating narratives that take advantage of the flexibility of form offered by the computer. The course studies the structural properties of book-based narratives that experiment with digression, multiple points of view, disruptions of time and of storyline. The class analyzes the structure and evaluates the literary qualities of computer-based narratives including hypertexts, adventure games, and classic artificial intelligence programs like Eliza. 11.2 Step 1 – identification of the problem

The activity of identifying a problem to be solved or a need to be met is a key step for the start of the innovation process. As you saw earlier there's a range of possible starting points. You've already seen examples where curiosity drives people to look for applications of certain scientific or technical principles such as Cockerell and air-cushion transport. Sometimes people identify an unsolved need, such as Percy Shaw and unlit roads. Sometimes people identify a need with an unsatisfact

10.8 Need to improve product or process

Even though an invention will have been thoroughly tested before launch it's not possible for a company to test its performance in every situation in which it will be used. Real users are likely to discover how the product might not perform well or how it doesn't meet their needs. Once a company learns about these deficiencies it can address them through redesign. There are a number of incentives to do this: improve the product's performance in order to increase its appeal to larger numbers o

3.1 Preamble

In a ground-breaking lecture, the philosopher and historian of ideas Isaiah Berlin (1909–97) argued that there are two basic types of freedom which have been defended by philosophers and political theorists: negative freedom and positive freedom. Within each category there is scope for quite a wide range of positions; but most theories of freedom fit quite comfortably into one category or the other.

Berlin's article is important for three reasons. First, it provides a us

3.3 The Tay Bridge disaster

This unit will analyse a particular historical event, the Tay Bridge disaster of 1879. The disaster came towards the end of a period of intense development of the railway system in the UK. The bridge had materials that were well known: cast iron was used for the columns and wrought iron for the trussed girders. The construction of the bridge was, at the time, the largest single engineering project in Britain, the Tay estuary being about two miles wide near Dundee, and the bridge was the longe

4.5 Structural explanations III: cultures

An early and influential body of research by the Chicago School of sociology explained criminal behaviour in terms of cultural structures. The school studied American male juvenile delinquents – or young offenders – in inter-war American cities (Shaw and McKay, 1969). Here we use the term culture to describe the web of meanings and values that individuals live their life within. (Recall from Section 1.1 how important every-day norms and conventions were in defining the meaning of c

5.3.3 Using visualization

The important thing is to find out which technique works for you, and to practise it before the exam, so that if the need arises you can switch into the technique during the exam itself.

For a very small number of students with more persistent anxiety, medical advice can be very helpful. If this is the case, it is really important to talk to an advisor or tutor, to see what special exam arrangements are possible.

3 Reading articles for mathematical information

We gain much of our mathematical information from our surroundings, including reading newspaper and magazine articles. A skill that will be useful to all of us in our studies is the ability to do this in a structured way, as it is very easy to be uncritical of the information that we see. Newspapers and magazines frequently place mathematical information in the form of graphs and diagrams. All too often, we tend to assume that the information is correct, without questioning possible bias or i

2 Starting to use DV

DV, therefore, is a learning and teaching tool that has a lot to offer and one we cannot afford to ignore. Increasingly, DV will become an essential part of the teacher's ‘toolbox’, but it is one whose use has to be planned, in order for it to be effective.

This unit aims to familiarise you with the techniques and concepts of DV and to help you consider ho

5.2 Before the visit

In preparation for the visit the tutor will need to:

  • Telephone the school to agree a date and time with the mentor and school co-ordinator for the visit.

  • Write to the school confirming the visit. This letter should:

    1. set out the tasks and activities the mentor will need to do;

    2. request that a focus for the observation is agreed with the student teacher and mentor;
