Improving Your Commute
Road traffic is a challenging societal problem, and with the increasing crowding of areas in and around cities, it is only becoming worse. With the proliferation of wireless connectivity, smartphones (think cheap embedded computers), it is now possible to continuously monitor urban areas using mobile sensors carried by people
The Physical Environment: An Introduction to Physical Geography
This is an interactive textbook on principles of The Physical Environment. The Physical Environment is one of the first, totally online physical geography learning environments. The Physical Environment combines text, images, audio and video programs to deliver the subject matter content. A multimedia online environment enables new and different ways to interact with textbook content.
Toxic and Harmful Algal Blooms
These activities, in conjunction with Bigelow Laboratory's “Toxic and Harmful Algal Bloom" web site, will help your students gain a better understanding of toxic and harmful algal blooms. Each module below consists of background content material and related standards-based activities. Each module is independent of the others; however, some background knowledge is required to complete the lessons.
Optional Soil Moisture Sensor Protocol
The purpose of this resource is to measure the water content of soil based on the electrical resistance of soil moisture sensors. Students install soil moisture sensors in holes that are 10 cm, 30 cm, 60 cm, and 90 cm deep. They take daily readings of soil moisture data by connecting a meter to the sensors and using a calibration curve to determine the soil water content at each depth.
Teaching Advanced Architectural Issues Through Principles of CAAD
The paper discusses the differences between teaching CAAD by using standard software ("off-the-shelf"-software) and teaching the principles of CAAD ("principles-teaching"). The paper distinguishes four kinds of application for design systems in education: social systems, professional systems, educational systems, and innovative systems. The paper furthermore proposes to distinguish between computational issues and architectural issues relative to design systems. It appears that there is not a pr

USGS Natural Hazards and Public Safety
This USGS portal offers information about the origin, frequency, and distribution of natural geologic hazards and catastrophic events, and the resulting impacts on people, property, and the environment. Featured sites provide user-friendly information and graphics about earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, El Nino, hurricanes, and erosion studies. Information is available about both general topics and specific events, and each site includes additional links to a multitude of other resources within
Two Particle Elastic Collision Model
The EJS Elastic Collision Model allows the user to simulate a two-dimensional elastic collision between hard disks. The user can modify the mass, position and velocity of each disk using the sliders. Both disks are draggable and the center of mass is shown a a cross in the simulation.
Optical Resolution Model
The EJS Optical Resolution model computes the image from two point sources as seen through a circular aperture such as a telescope or a microscope. The simulation allows the user to vary the distance between the light sources and the diameter of the aperture, as well as the intensity of the light source.
How to write articles
This resource includes content and activities about writing articles. It presents information and examples related to structure, layout, language and editing.
Photography Rube Goldberg Machine
How do you take a picture? Hopefully not like this! A fantastic example of a Rube Goldberg. A Rube Goldberg machine is any device that is a deliberately over-engineered or overdone machine to perform a very simple task.
