Reactive Learning Objects for Distributed e-Learning Environments
We present a concept of reactive learning objects that goes away from the hydraulic view of e-learning and gives to students activity a central place. First experimentations suggest that this concept should be enlarged to include distributed computation, distributed storage and Web services.

The Semantic Aspects of e-Learning: Using the Knowledge Life Cycle to Manage Semantics for Grid and
The aim of bringing semantics to learning content and services is to enable large scale collaboration of e-learning activities over the Grid infrastructure. As machines and software applications will be ubiquitously involved in enabling and facilitating this collaboration, it requires a common understanding of the domain, in particular at the conceptual level, so that both computers and human participants of the e-learning activities understand and are able to communicate among themselves thoug

GRID Technologies => 'Education' = 'Distance Education'
This paper discusses the new possibilities that Grid technologies create in education, presents current learning paradigms and makes a prediction about the way in which Grid technologies may affect the future of education. The case of the Hellenic Open University (HOU) is presented and the current educational technologies and tools used are illustrated. The paper also presents a scenario for the utilization of Grid technologies at HOU and discusses the challenges that such infrastructure create

A bootstrapping scenario for elicitating CSCL services within a GRID virtual community
Amongst the various eLearning techniques, Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) is of growing interest within the academic world. However, during the first phase of the EleGI project, a noticable fact has been the difficulty to match the user needs with the potentiality of the GRID services. Thus, through a fictive scenario, this article proposes to walk the path between the idea of creating a new virtual community and the realisation of this objective. This scenario takes the situat

Experiences with Writing Grid Clients for Mobile devices
This paper describes our attempts to write GRID clients for Mobile Devices, such as a PDA, which have restrictive computational and storage facilities. Our experiences are based on an implementation of a mobile GRID client for Finesse, an existing web-based e-learning system. At this stage of our work we are not looking to novel applications of mobile learning, but rather are exploring the feasibility of mobile devices as GRID platforms, with novel learning applications as our future aim. We ex

Movement and interaction in semantic GRIDs: dynamic service generation for Agents in the MIC* deploy
We present in this position paper the foundations of the MIC* model and deployment environment as they have emerged in the last years, relate them to current evolutions on semantic GRID dynamic service generation, as reflected by OGSA/I and, more recently, by WSRF, and propose an integrated view with the previously proposed STROBE model for communicating agents leading to a quite simple yet very promising architecture that may include Human agents in the loop, uninspectable as most artificial ag

Virtual Reality for Learning: Sharing Experiences rather than Resources
Virtual Reality is becoming a major candidate for embodying immersive learning environments. Whereas in the two preceding decades learning has been conceptualized as situations where students are guided rather than elicited to undertake actions, it is now the right time to explore the other side or the continuum.

The Triangle Teacher - Pupil - Knowledge in E-Learning Environment
Our proposal starts from the study of the epistemological statute of the didactics of the mathematics (Henry, 1991; D'Amore, 1999), which faces the phenomenon of learning from the point of view of fundaments, in order to give useful and specific considerations for e-learning environment. In particular we will focus on how the triangle, teacher-pupil-knowledge changes when we use e-learning platforms.

Educational Knowledge Based Environment
In this paper a knowledge based environment is represented which facilitates easy creation and preparation of wide range of educational software. The heart of the environment is the knowledge representation tool providing a hybrid knowledge representation formalism combining frames, production rules and logic. The environment is built on the basis of the logic programming language Prolog.

WebLabs: Virtual collaborative learning experience for researchers, teachers and students
The paper presents experiences from a 3 year international project, WebLabs: New representational infrastructure for e-learning, in which researchers, teachers and young students from UK, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Sweden, Portugal and Italy participated. The project explored innovative pedagogy based on the integration of constructionist learning approach and virtual co-learning. For the purposes of the project a visual programming environment, Toon Talk, and a virtual collaborative system, Wplone, were

Affordances – a Merleau-Pontian Account
In this paper, the concept of ‘affordance’ is given an ontological and epistemological explication building on a Merleau-Pontian view of human being as always already being-in-the world in a non-thematized, pre-reflective correspondence of body and world in the concrete activity. A dynamic, agent-centred, cultural-, experience- and skill-relative, but perception-independent, ontology is proposed for affordances. It is argued that this is more in line with the original Gibsonian understanding

A Robot in Kindergarten
These thought are the result of work in progress, started in 1999, within the scope of the Trás-os-Montes Digital/SCETAD, project (sub-project: ICEI – Computers in Early Childhood Education Contexts). The work took place in Portuguese kindergarten rooms, with children aged 3, 4, 5 and 6. The ICEI sub-project aims to promote the use of ICT in a playful but pedagogical way, be it free or directed. This use is intended to occur within the scope of activities developed for the micro-spaces of the

How internal and external scripts guide argumentative knowledge construction in a web-based collabor
Collaboration scripts are a powerful means to improve collaborative inquiry learning. More specifically, they can be designed to support argumentative knowledge construction, a core activity in inquiry learning. However, not only externally induced collaboration scripts but also the learners’ internal scripts on collaborative argumentative knowledge construction influence the way they argue with scientific concepts and evidence, thereby affecting what kind of knowledge is acquired during colla

This thesis aims to be a contribution to the integration of activities with computer programming into preschool education contexts. It is based on experiences and observations of children aged 3, 4, and 5 years olds programming computers, using an animated programming language, ToonTalk, held between 2000 and 2004 in seven different settings, typically in weekly session held over the course of several months in each year, involving approximately 150 children and 10 educators, including early chi

The role of roles in the analysis of interactions in collaborative environments
Analysis of interactions has become a basic function in the field of collaborative learning, as a means for supporting both students' self-regulation as well as formative evaluation processes. However, we observe a lack of methods and tools for the analysis of interactions in CSCL that considerer the different roles implied in collaboration management processes, both from the point of view of the actors that take part in a typical CSCL scenario: teachers, students or the system

For a renewed academy industry research partnership
The joint venture between the academic research on learning technology and industry along the past decade shares similarity with the gold rush: great effort for a too small outcome. From all the energy spent, “acadustry” has emerged; a chimerical community of practice, merging academic and industry objectives and traditions. The relevance and fruitfulness of this new community is questionable. This presentation will suggest revisiting the orientation of the eLearning research policy, taking
