The Aplusix-Editor: A New Kind of Software for the Learning of Algebra
The first part of the paper presents our conception of a new kind of software for helping students to learn algebra. Such software has three main characteristics. First it includes an advanced editor that allows the student to build easily algebraic expressions. Second it reifies the student's reasoning as a tree. Third it verifies the student's calculations. In the second part, we present the Aplusix-Editor, a system of that kind that we have realised, and we describe the first tests of this sy
Knowledge management and learning in the organizational context
In the last decades, learning and knowledge have become key success factors for international competitiveness with the result that intangible and immaterial resources have overtaken physical and tangible assets in order of importance. The introduction of knowledge management (KM) practices and initiatives has provided companies with new opportunities to maximize the value of the knowledge they possess. It has helped as well to increase their capacity to learn and adapt quicker to the environment
Mathematics and E-Learning: A conceptual framework
This paper starts from the study of the epistemological statute of the didactics of the
mathematics (Henry, 1991; D'Amore, 1999), which faces the phenomenon of
learning from the point of view of fundaments, in order to give useful and specific
considerations for e-learning environments. Investigations on how the triangle
teacher-pupil-knowledge changes are presented. Then the model of a-didactic
situations (Brousseau, 1997) is analysed in the context of e-learning platforms.
Didactic Decision-Making Process
In a Surgery Learning Environment
In this paper we present our model of the didactic decision-making process and our
method to define the apprenticeship utility function. This model is embedded in a computer-based
learning environment dedicated to orthopedic surgery. The decision model allows the production
of feedback relevant to the user’s knowledge during her/his activities with the learning
environment.
The surgical knowledge in the learning environment is represented with Bayesian Networks and

Choosing for learning objects: The possible deployment of learning objects with eight educational am
The Dutch six-part series Leerobjecten in de praktijk (Learning objects in practice) is about six divergent and difficult problems that occur frequently in working with learning objects. Based on research into existing practice, guidelines are offered to policy makers, educational technology consultants, teachers, educational designers and developers of digital learning materials who are struggling with these problems in higher education.
Choosing for learning objects discusses eight education
Are well-designed Web sites efficient for learning mathematics at the undergraduate level?
We conducted an experiment in order to examine the effectiveness of an educational Web site, which provides resources to undergraduate students in mathematics. The participants' task was to solve 18 questions about differential equations. Students in the paper condition outperformed those in Web site conditions. There was no difference between the original and an improved Web site version. Moreover, students in all conditions preferred working with the paper resource. Practical and theoretical i
Clustering Students to help Evaluate Learning
In this paper we show how clustering techniques can be applied to
student answers generated from a web-based tutoring tool. In particular we
are interested in extracting clusters of students based on the mistakes
they made using the tool, with the aim of obtaining pedagogically
relevant information and providing this feedback to the teacher. The data we used comes from the Logic-ITA, a web-based tutoring tool to practice formal proofs currently in use in the School of Information Technologies at
e-COMODE Services for the Implementation of Collaborative Modelling Environments in Schools.
e-COMODE is an open digital learning environment, which assists young
students (10-17 year old) in creating models. e-COMODE services aim to offer a
collaborative modelling environment, including pedagogical, technical and
implementation support services. The market validation of the different services has
been performed in different environments, private and state schools, from different
geographical areas; Greece, Spain and North Ireland in the UK, in order to confirm
the business model develo
Student's modelling with a lattice of conceptions in the domain of linear equations and inequations
We present a student's modelling process in algebra which consists of two phases. The first phase is a local diagnosis where a student's transformation of an expression A into an expression B is diagnosed with a sequence of rewriting rules. A library of correct and incorrect rules has been built for that purpose. The second phase uses a lattice of conceptions built for modelling students more globally. Conceptions are attributed to students according to a mechanism using the local diagnoses as i
A comparison of preferred learning styles, approaches and methods between information science and co
In recent years the two disciplines of Information and Library Studies and Computing Science have drawn closer together to the extent that now there are several Universities where they are combined in a single school of Information and Computing Science or Informatics. Currently, a single Higher Education Academy Subject Centre serves the two disciplines. However, there are marked differences between the disciplines observable immediately in the gender balance of their respective undergraduate c
Hypertext navigation and conflicting goal intentions: Using log files to study distraction and volit
This paper describes a theoretical analysis and experimental investigation of difficulty related distraction by conflicting goal intentions in learning and problem solving with hypertext. Log files are used to capture hypertext navigation in the face of opportunities to implement competing goal intentions. We study how differences in task difficulty influence the volitional protection of the current goal intention. First attempts to integrate volitional processes of action control into cognitive
Survey of narrative theories for learning environments
This deliverable surveys the area of Narrative Theories to be used in Interactive Learning Environments.,(D13.2.1). EU Sixth Framework programme priority 2, Information society technology, Network of Excellence Kaleidoscope, (contract NoE IST-507838), project "Narrative and Learning Environments"
SMECTRA - An European network for online counselling on the application of new media in enterprise t
This communication introduces the objectives and the innovative approaches proposed in the frame of the Leonardo da Vinci pilot project SMECTRA: "Small and Medium Enterprises Counselling and TRAining network for the efficient application of new media". More specifically, it focuses on the evaluation of the status of vocational training and e-Learning in Small and Medium Enterprises emphasising that the technology and the content are not sufficient to implement successful e-Learning programmes, b
Networked Management Learning for Managers of Small and Medium Enterprises
This paper argues that networked management learning might have specific relevance for SME management development since this model recognizes the importance of social relations and the associated relational dialogue that underpin knowledge and innovation in specific business contexts. Indeed NML reinforces the centrality of networking entrepreneurs and other relevant actors at the local level to increase the effectiveness of their actions and also helps integrate the different components of the
Keeping Score: new approaches to the standard of living
Measuring social performance is an important task in the social sciences, and the complexity of the problem has given rise to numerous approaches. In this lecture, Professor Steckel will discuss the use of anthropomorphic measures in this field, and explain the advantages of height as a measure of standard of living. Richard H Steckel is SBS Distinguished Professor of Economics, Anthropology and History at Ohio State University. The Space for Thought Lecture series celebrates the completion of t
