Boston curfew proposal
David Boeri reports that Ray Flynn (Mayor of Boston) is considering a curfew for teenagers in the city of Boston, in the wake of the murder of Kimberly Ray Harbor (murder victim) on Franklin Field. Boeri reviews the details of Harbor's murder. Boeri's report includes footage of the murder suspects entering a courtroom. Boeri notes that the curfew would prohibit teenagers from being on the streets after 11:00 pm on weeknights and after 12:00am on weekends. Boeri interviews a group of pre-adolesce

Aviation Memories
'Aviation Memories' is described as a 'virtual multi-channel video installation.' The work begins as an introduction to possible installations of video work, showing (with diagrams and animation) how monitors and related objects would be placed in a gallery setting. As the content of the video itself is described and presented, the work blurs the line between art object and planning document. Many of the images presented are derived from the illustrations of Jan Vredeman de Vries (1527-1604). Ar

Who Can Live Here? Life in Extreme Environments
Astrobiology in the Classroom leads students in the exploration of the limits of life on Earth to extend their beliefs about life to include its possibility on other worlds. In this four-part activity, students first explore the environments of several mammals and birds to better understand how living things and their environments interact and depend on each other. In the second part, students match bacterial types with their more extreme environments. Students discover that an environment's tem

Magnetic Field Activities for the High School Classroom
The following unit is designed to acquaint the student with the magnetic field. The assumed average student has some familiarity with the uniform gravitational field of classical Newtonian dynamics and kinematics lessons. This is not required however. The unit is meant to introduce the idea of a field through investigations of magnetic fields as produced by various common magnetic materials and direct currents. The difference between a magnetic field and a gravitational field is that a gravitati

NPR: Bushwhacking with a Big-Tree Hunter A Walk on the Wild Side with Bob Van Pelt
Some people hunt animals and others hunt for trees. In this National Public Radio story, one in a special series called Big Trees and the Lives They've Changed, Ketzel Levine accompanies the foremost big tree hunter into the forests of the northwest. While they do find some big trees, it's what they don't find -- the absence of big trees -- that's most illuminating. By big, we're talking trees that are in excess of forty feet in circumference and as tall as a football field is long; they are hug

Mendel's experiments
In this web lab, Gregor Mendel directs students through interactive virtual experiments. Students experiment with pea plants to discover how the seven pairs of traits that Mendel studied are inherited. The lab can be completed linearly, or students can move to a particular segment using the Sections menu. After they observe pea plants and infer the number of traits present, students perform five plant crosses. Mendel instructs students to search for patterns in the transmission of traits. Next,

Auburn vs. Miami (1954)
"Playing his best eleven men instead of alternating his famous X and Y units, Coach Jordan sent his charges against unbeaten Miami, ranked fourth nationally. After a scoreless first quarter, Miami intercepted a pass and returned it deep into Auburn territory. On fourth down, Garrigus lifted a 19 yard aerial to Tom Pepsin and Miami took the lead, 7.0. The score remained unchanged until midway in the third period. Taking an Auburn punt at their own 11 yard line, the Hurricanes advanced the ball to
