Volume of composite figures
In this video, learn how to determine the volume of two composite figures. The first example consists of two rectangular prisms. The second example consists of a triangular prism and a rectangular prism. The instructor shows how to divide each into separate shapes, then uses the formula for volume to compute the volume of each shape, and finally adds each volume to find the volume of the composite figure. In this outdoor activity/field trip, learners investigate the special shapes, holding structures and holding behaviors that real organisms use in streams, rivers, creeks or coast intertidal zones to avoid being swept away by moving water. Learners then create their own "animal" with holding adaptations. The activity includes drawings that detail helpful equipment such as bug boxes and dip nets, as well as instructions for making a milk-carton observation tray and flow-through trough.

Exploring Magnetic Field Lines
In this activity, learners explore the magnetic field of a bar magnet as an introduction to understanding Earth's magnetic field. First, learners explore and play with magnets and compasses. Then, learners trace the field lines of the magnet using the compass on a large piece of paper. This activity will also demonstrate why prominences are always "loops."
