Few signs of relief in Haiti
The mounting cholera epidemic in Haiti will likely get worse according to Oxfam. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Chilean observatory reaches for the stars
Oct 29. - Stunning new images of the Milky Way, recently released by the European Southern Observatory, have excited astronomers and amateur star gazers around the world. But they are merely the latest of many ground-breaking observations recorded at the facility since it was established fifty years ago. Tara Cleary reports.
In this activity (located on pages 9-14 of PDF), learners visit a cemetery to examine the distinguishing characteristics of rock weathering. After researching stone weathering and acid rain, learners apply their knowledge to collect data related to chemical decomposition and physical disintegration at a cemetery site. This detailed lesson guide includes tips for educators, pre/post activity suggestions, hands-outs, and background information.
This is a fun song all about shapes. It is a good introduction to shapes; what they are and many examples. It has a good beat and is easy for students to sing along with. (03:26)
Volume of composite figures
In this video, learn how to determine the volume of two composite figures. The first example consists of two rectangular prisms. The second example consists of a triangular prism and a rectangular prism. The instructor shows how to divide each into separate shapes, then uses the formula for volume to compute the volume of each shape, and finally adds each volume to find the volume of the composite figure. (6:29)
In this outdoor activity/field trip, learners investigate the special shapes, holding structures and holding behaviors that real organisms use in streams, rivers, creeks or coast intertidal zones to avoid being swept away by moving water. Learners then create their own "animal" with holding adaptations. The activity includes drawings that detail helpful equipment such as bug boxes and dip nets, as well as instructions for making a milk-carton observation tray and flow-through trough.
Cómo lanzar la bola con ritmo - en español
Para ser un buen pitcher uno ha de ser capaz de imprimir un cierto ritmo en la bola cuando la lance. Este vídeo enseña cómo hacerlo. (.43)
Reaction Rates Factors
The teacher in this short video discusses the factors that influence how fast reactions take place. It's a good introduction to kinetics. She doesn't go into detail and solve actual problem, but this is a good foundation (03:05).
Part of kinetics is understanding reaction mechanisms. The teacher in this video introduces mechanims first by discussing the important terms: complex reaction, intermediate, catalyst, and the rate determining step (06:06).
Energy diagrams are an important concept to master when learning about kinetics. They will show up on tests like the AP exam for sure. The teacher in this video draws some energy diagrams and talks about the changes a catalyst can cause (03:49).
Name That Park
In this online interactive, learners are introduced to the basic function of Geographic Information System (GIS) maps in relation to national parks. Recognizable park boundaries are presented and learners are given the option to add layers such as lakes, rivers and visitor centers, until the learner is able to identify the park map from a list of choices.
My Angle on Cooling
In this activity, learners discover that one way to cool an object in the presence of a heat source is to increase the distance from it or change the angle at which it is faced. Learners perform an experiment that measures how the heat experienced by a test subject changes as the distance or the viewing angle changes. Learners distinguish which effect is more important for determining the seasons on Earth. Learners examine how NASA's MESSENGER mission to Mercury takes advantage of these passive
In this activity, learners make flipbooks of drawings showing the progression of a Total Solar Eclipse. Learners can use images of an eclipse or have lenticulars available so they can observe the real thing. Learners can also hypothesize about the appearance of the corona.
Exploring Magnetic Field Lines
In this activity, learners explore the magnetic field of a bar magnet as an introduction to understanding Earth's magnetic field. First, learners explore and play with magnets and compasses. Then, learners trace the field lines of the magnet using the compass on a large piece of paper. This activity will also demonstrate why prominences are always "loops."
How Do Birds Fly?
This video explains how birds fly in a simplistic way using animation and a thorough narrative. (02:29)

Environmentalist Dan Miller discusses images of arctic ice melting trends at the North Pole. He argues that light once reflected off the surface of the melting ice is now being absorbed by water, priming a feedback loop that will continuously accelerate the melting process. (03:03)
