Insights - Personal Health Advocates
Professor Timothy Bickmore will describe a vision for an automated persistent and proactive "health advocate" that functions as a self-care coach for preventive medicine and a mediator for interactions with the health care system. He will also discuss research models that examine a variety of patient-provider interactions, including wellness promotion, self-care education at hospital discharge, and the promotion of at-home medication adherence.

Virtual Violence
Two psychology professors at SMU are using virtual reality to help young women recognize unwanted sexual advances and learn ways to prevent it. The study is designed to take women on a virtual date simulating a party or being alone in a parked car. Research has shown that the use of virtual reality can enhance efforts at teaching girls and young women how to respond and recognize to sexually threatening situation.

(May 19, 2010) Janice Ross, Professor and Director of the Dance Division in the Drama Department at Stanford University, discusses a service-learning course that she began eight years ago that brings Stanford students into local juvenile halls to teach dance to incarcerated teenagers and how this experience impacts understanding about the relationship of aesthetics to politics.
