Technical Paper 7 - The Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) Project: Social/behaviour
This Technical Paper describes the results of analyses of young children's cognitive progress during their time in pre-school. Equivalent results on social behavioural development are reported in EPPE Technical Paper 8b. Five measures of cognitive attainment assessed at entry to primary school have been studied: pre-reading, language attainment, two measures of non-verbal attainment and early number concepts. A range of statistical methods (multilevel modelling) have been used to analyse data fo
Technical Paper 6A - The Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) Project: Characteristics
As part of the study all pre-schools were assessed using an observational assessment known as the Early Childhood Rating Scale, (ECERS-R) plus an extension to it (ECERS-E) based upon the Desirable Learning Outcomes (QCA 1996). ECERS provides measures of the quality of education and care which children receive in settings plus some measures of facilities relating to facilities and human resources. Completion of the ECERS profile required one day of observation plus talking to staff about aspects
Technical Paper 3 - The Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) Project: Contextualising
This paper looks at the impact of recent government initiatives on early childhood care and education for 3 to 5-year olds in the full range of pre-school centres in the study. This was based on interviews conducted with 135 heads of pre-school settings and 12 local authority co-ordinators in six local authorities. At a time of rapid policy development and because of the diversity in pre-school provision, the EPPE study recorded how recent changes in local authority under-fives provision might b
Solid State Physics
In the electrical engineering, solid-state materials and the properties play an essential role. A thorough understanding of the physics of metals, insulators and semiconductor materials is essential for designing new electronic devices and circuits. After short introduction of the IC fabrication process, the course starts with the crystallography. This will be followed by the basic principle of the quantum mechanics, the sold-state physics, band-structure and the relation with electrical propert

The Tuskegee Legacy: AIDS and the Black Community
No scientific experiment inflicted more damage on the collective psyche of black Americans than the Tuskegee study. After Jean Heller broke the story in 1972, news of the tragedy spread in the black community. Confronted with the experiment's moral bankruptcy, many blacks lost faith in the government and no longer believed health officials who spoke on matters of public concern. Consequently, when a terrifying new plague swept the land in the 1980s and 1990s, the Tuskegee study predisposed many
Choosing books that are "just right"
This teacher research study examines how students select books for independent reading and how teachers can help them make choices more appropriate to their reading levels.

Engaging the Community in Multidisciplinary TEL Research: A Case-Study from Networking in Europe
The STELLAR Network of Excellence was launched in February 2009 with the explicit intention of Sustaining Large Scale Multi-Disciplinary Research in Technology Enhanced Learning. So as to support this aim, the network has defined a number of different activity tracks, aimed at building capacity amongst senior-level researchers/decision makers, mid-level researchers and junior researchers/PhD students as well with a separate track dedicated to building community level capacity.

Unwanted Sex Versus Rape: How the Language Used to Describe Sexual Assault Impacts Perceptions of Pe
A review of recent psychology and medical literature reveals that the term ‘unwanted sex’ has become commonly used in journals. Despite this, no universally held definition for the term could be found. Uses ranged from consensual, yet undesirable sexual intercourse, to rape. It was hypothesized that the term ‘unwanted sex’ may have different connotations than the word rape and impact perceptions of what occurred. It was also hypothesized that using the term ‘unwanted sex’ instead of
“The Melting Pot Where Nothing Melted”: The Politics of Subjectivity in the Plays of Suzan-Lori
This study explores the issues of “being American” in light of race, class, gender, and sexuality, which construct contemporary American identity as represented in the plays of Suzan-Lori Parks, Wendy Wasserstein, and Tony Kushner. Whites, the economically privileged middle class, males, and heterosexuals constitute the American mainstream, and many (in)visible types of social discrimination and prejudice by the mainstream culture against “the others” exist in contemporary American socie
Mother and Teacher Interaction in Preschools during Parent-Teacher Conferences
The education of children has been a long-standing issue for stakeholders over numerous years. Various literatures recommend that formal learning should begin during the preschool years of a child’s life, and must include home-school partnerships. Empirical data has shown that parents and teachers who work together can positively impact a child’s success in school. This study sought to gain insight into the phenomenon of parent-teacher interactions in preschools, via the lens of symbolic int
