User Interfaces for a Virtual Learning Environment: Two Study Cases
A recent powerful idea in the design of Web-based learning environments is the usage of virtual places. The employment of interface metaphors is one of the approaches enabling inexperienced users to feel comfortable in such virtual environments. We have designed a Virtual Environment for Distance Education and Training (VEDET), which provides basic virtual spaces, resources, and services. In this paper we discuss the user interface of two Web-based distance learning courses Business on the Inter
An Underground River
Groundwater is one of the largest sources of drinking water, so environmental engineers need to understand groundwater flow in order to tap into this important resource. Environmental engineers also study groundwater to predict where pollution from the surface may end up. In this lesson, students will learn how water flows through the ground, what an aquifer is and what soil properties are used to predict groundwater flow.
Role of Assistance in Computer-mediated Communication in Higher Education
This paper reports preliminary findings of a small scale study that address the role of
assistance in computer-mediated communication (CMC) in Higher Education. In
particular, this study investigates whether the type of assistance in such environments
is affected by the type of task used to initiate the CMC, and to see whether the
instructors and students offer more or less assistance according to task type. We
examine courses which use CMC in the adjunct mode i.e. students used CMC as an
option
May the Force Be With You: Thrust
In this lesson, students will study how propellers and jet turbines generate thrust. This lesson focuses on Isaac Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion, which states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
How people in virtual groups and communities (fail to) interact.
In 4 different research projects taking place in our department, students, teachers, researchers,
policymakers and policemen are communicating and interacting through shared electronic work
spaces between face to face meetings. The students interact about their studies in pedagogy. The
teachers, researchers and policymakers interact about ICT in higher education. The researchers
are from different universities all over Europe and interact between meetings about their
collaborative research proje
Implementing Learning Design to support web-based learning.
In this paper we consider an initial implementation of a system for managing and using
IMS Learning Design (LD) to represent online learning activities. LD has been suggested
(Koper & Olivier, 2004) as a flexible way to represent and encode learning materials,
especially suited to online and web-based learning while neutral to the pedagogy that is
being applied. As such it offers a chance to address a gap in the preparation of learning
materials and their eventual use by students by providing a

HST.721 The Peripheral Auditory System (MIT)
In this course, experimental approaches to the study of hearing and deafness are presented through lectures, laboratory exercises and discussions of the primary literature on the auditory periphery. Topics include inner-ear development, functional anatomy of the inner ear, cochlear mechanics and micromechanics, mechano-electric transduction by hair cells, outer hair cells' electromotility and the cochlear amplifier, otoacoustic emissions, synaptic transmission, stimulus coding in auditory nerve
Re-engineering of collaborative e-learning systems: evaluation of system, collaboration and acquired
This paper relates an experimentation of a collaborative e-learning system.
In this kind of system, tracks arising from communication tools allow to build useful
indicators for all system actors. We show how tracks are analyzed and how this
analysis is useful for reengineering purposes.
Organisational patterns for e-learning centres
In this paper we explore the notion of using organisational patterns in educational design for the development of e-learning centres. We are using patterns to discuss some of the key aspects concerning the implementation of an e-learning centre within an institution, with an emphasis on the purposes and pedagogical principles that will help to successfully support such an initiative. The research approach which informed our pattern development work includes use of a qualitative survey of a set o

8.851 Strong Interactions: Effective Field Theories of QCD (MIT)
This is a course in the construction and application of effective field theories, which are the modern tool of choice in making predictions based on the Standard Model. Concepts such as matching, renormalization, the operator product expansion, power counting, and running with the renormalization group will be discussed. Topics will be taken from factorization in hard processes relevant for the LHC, heavy quark decays and CP violation, chiral perturbation theory, non-relativistic bound states in

First steps and second thoughts on method: beginning to research the learning of new
teachers
This paper is an account of our progress in addressing the challenge of developing a quasi-experimental method of assessing early professional learning (EPL), based on a model from data gathered by teachers as ethnographers in their own schools. From the early doubts and debates in internal discussions about the research design, we present in this paper the steps taken so far and our thoughts about these. Progress on the five indicators of early professional learning in the proposal are describe

Circus in America: 1793-1940
This archive traces the history of the American circus since 1793, when British equestrian John Rickets presented the first circus in America. Learn about the acts, animals, people, music, and marketing of circuses -- and the impact of the circus on popular culture in America. Get an in depth look at six major circuses, including P.T. Barnum and the Ringling Brothers. A timeline and video clips are provided. The site contains artifacts from private collections, museums, archives, brought togethe
The restless Universe
The restless Universe introduces you to major achievements and figures in the history of physics, from Copernicus to Einstein and beyond. The route from classical to quantum physics will be laid out for you without recourse to challenging mathematics but with the fundamental features of theories and discoveries described in sufficient detail to whet your appetite for further physics study.
