Inaugural Lecture Prof Nick Frost - Assessing Modern British Childhood: research, policy and practic
This lecture explored the contemporary policy agenda for children and young people living in England. The major focus of the lecture was on the relationship between the state and modern childhood.
The lecture then moved on to examine the state of contemporary British childhood. A series of recent research and policy reports have suggested that British children inhabit a world that compares negatively to children in otherwise comparable societies. Childhood and youth are also a high profile and

Demystifying Hardy-Weinberg: Using Cellulose Acetate Electrophoresis of the Lap Locus to Study Popul
A laboratory exercise to use look at population genetics using seedlings from several population of a perennial herb, cellulose acetate protein electrophoresis and the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium Theory.
An Experimental System to Study Phagocytosis
A laboratory exercise using simple technique of feeding ink to protozoan, Tetrahymena, to observe and quantitate phagocytosis in the protozoan. It also introduces students to the microscope and inquiry-based laboratory investigations
A Study of Gene Linkage and Mapping Using Tetrad Analysis in the Fungus Sordaria fimicola
This laboratory focuses on some aspects of spore color determination in the fungus Sordaria fimicola. Tetrad analysis of asci from a cross between strains mutant for two spore color genes is used to determine if the genes are linked and to map the location of each gene relative to the centromere. This laboratory is logistically simple and inexpensive, the data are relatively easy to collect, and the analysis facilitates a good understanding of meiosis and Mendel's principles of inheritance. Alte
A Quantitative Study of Litter and Soil Invertebrates Utilizing the Berlese Funnel
This exercise is meant to familiarize students with invertebrates that inhabit litter and soil and to help them appreciate the importance of these organisms in the environment.
A Quantitative Enzyme Study Using Simple Equipment
This resource consists of a simple laboratory exercise including detailed protocols, outlines and background information for students, and instructors notes.
A Field Study of the Ant Trail Phenomenon
In this exercise, students place food at various distances from an ant hill or nest. Ants are then observes as they find the bait and lead other ants to it. At the completion of the exercise, students construct a graph which shows the establishment of trails, recruitment of workers, and depletion of the bait.
A Field Study of Interspecific Relationships
This exercise can be used to study population ecology, food webs and trophic levels. It is meant to give students a better understanding of the interrelatedness of organisms in a community by studying several common local relationships.
A Developmental Study of the Japanese Medaka Oryzias latipes and the Water Fern Marsilea
This exercise is a demonstration and is observation based. It requires students to carefully study the materials provided.
A Comparative Study of the Demography of Human Populations
In this exercise students evaluate and discuss the social implications of biological information and principles. Each small group collects demographic data about a country of their choice from three databases. They use Excel to graph the age structure and population growth of their chosen country. After collecting and organizing this demographic information, as well as related socio-economic data, each group prepares a poster describing their country. In the poster session, students evaluate rel
