AB EX NY: Art Terms in Action: Emulsion
An emulsion is a combination of two or more liquids that do not blend easily on their own, such as oil and water. A common example of an emulsion is a vinaigrette salad dressing, in which you might use egg yolk to keep the vinegar and olive oil from separating. Similarly, painters can use egg yolk to emulsify oil paint and water.

AB EX NY: Art Terms in Action: Enamel
Enamel paints are household and automobile paints that are formulated to be very fluid. They are typically opaque and rich in pigment, since they are designed to cover a surface in a single coat of paint. Enamels can use an array of different binders that include alkyd (a modified linseed oil), acrylic, latex, and oil. Abstract Expressionist artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning were among the first to regularly use enamel paints in making works of art.

AB EX NY: Art Terms in Action: Paint
Paint is most often a combination of pigment, binder, and solvent. Pigment is the colored portion of the paint. It is often a finely ground material that is either found in nature or artificially produced. Binder holds the individual grains of pigment together. In oil paint, the most common binder is linseed oil, which typically dries to the touch in about one week. The binder in most acrylic paint is an acrylic resin; the binder in watercolor paint is a natural resin called gum arabic. Solvent
AB EX NY: Art Terms in Action: Palette Knife
A palette knife is a type of spatula typically used to mix paint on the palette. It can also be used to apply paint directly on the canvas and to remove it from the canvas.

AB EX NY: Art Terms in Action: Stain
A stain is a thinned paint made with a considerable amount of solvent. Stains are absorbed into the canvas, rather than remaining on its surface.

AB EX NY: Art Terms in Action: Turpentine Burn
A turpentine burn is made by soaking a rag in solvent and scrubbing the canvas directly. This technique removes paint and leaves a stain on the canvas.

AB EX NY: Art Terms in Action: Viscosity
Viscosity is the thickness of a liquid. Low-viscosity liquids are very fluid (such as water) while high-viscosity liquids are quite thick (such as molasses). The viscosity of oil paints is usually reduced by adding binder (such as linseed oil) and/or solvent (such as turpentine). At a lower viscosity, paint can be brushed onto the canvas more freely and quickly.

Mom Loved Him Best: Bert & Ivan Sutherland
[Recorded February 3, 2004]
Computing industry legends and brothers Bert and Ivan Sutherland reminisce about their collective 100 plus years with computers and electronics.
Bert Sutherland developed, managed and mentored some of the most important computing innovations of the past half-century, from Bolt, Beranek & Newman ( BBN) and Xerox PARC in the 1970s to managing Java development at Sun Microsystems Laboratories in the 1990s.
Ivan Sutherland is considered by many to be the creator of comp
The Xerox Alto: A Personal Retrospective
[Recorded: June 4, 2001]
Founded in 1970, the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) created, over a relatively short period, a paradigm shift in computing. Many of the technologies in modern personal computers, including high-quality graphical user interfaces featuring windows and icons, computer generated bitmapped graphics, Ethernet networked distributed computing, and laser printing, were mature technologies at PARC by the end of the 1970s.
The platform on which many of these technologies w
The Silicon Engine
[Recorded May 1, 2009]
The powerful and ubiquitous silicon chips that run the computers, smart phones and even the cars and appliances we use daily all spring from the transistor. That breakthrough invention later became the building blocks of the integrated circuit (IC), which later still blossomed into the semiconductors and microprocessors that have reshaped our modern lives. This video presents an overview of the 60-year history of innovation, invention and development that took us from vacu
The Atanasoff-Berry Computer In Operation
[Recorded: 1999]
The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) occupies a special place in the history of computing in part for its technical accomplishments but also for being at the center of a landmark legal case. It was built by Iowa physics professor John Vincent Atanasoff and graduate student Clifford Berry.
Technically, the ABC was an electronic equation solver. It could find solutions to systems of simultaneous linear equations with up to 29 unknowns, a type of problem encountered in Atansasoff'
