Supermarkets under scrutiny: Competition Policy inaction?
This student handout relates to a case study that examines developments within the UK supermarket industry since the mid 1990s that prompted two significant inquiries during the 1999-2007 period. It is available as a Word document of some 4 pages.
Frozen stress photoelastic fringe pattern during fibre pushout
The experiment indicates a more uniform of shear stress than that predicted by the shear lag model, suggesting that interfacial shear de-bonding strength values obtained from de-bonding loads on the basis of that model may be overestimates. (See 'The use of single fibre pushout testing to explore interfacial mechanisms in SiC monofilament-reinforced Ti-I. A photoelastic study of the test', Watson and Clyne, Acta metall. mater. Vol 40, No 1, pp 131-139, 1992 for more details.)
Twist-escaped loops in the liquid crystalline polymer MBBA
Once a weak shear flow is applied on the nematic liquid, there is a sudden and strong increase in the defect density. At a certain shear rate, the equilibrium density is reached after a while through the creation and annihilation of defects. This in-situ observation enables the study of a wide range of dynamic disclination behaviours during shear, such as disclination-joining, loop-contracting, loop-stretching and loop-breaking. The loops in this image result from type 1 disclinations 'escaping'
Maritime Transportation, Chemistry and Oil
These files outline a general introduction to a joint view of maritime transportation, chemistry and crude oil and petroleum products. They include study material and self evaluation tests, which could be covered in 35 hours. This material is suitable for 1st year undergraduate students enrolled in Nautical or Maritime Engineering Studies, and also for a general audience.
BURN - Biosciences Undergraduate Research at Nottingham
This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. Research produced 2006 - 2009. BURN brings final year undergraduate research work to public view in a professional and relevant way. The students represented here have risen to the challenges of doing rigorous research and presenting their work to a wider audience. Their articles show the distance they have travelled during their studies. They also demonstrate the inquiry and critical thinking skills that have been
This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught in Autumn Semester 2009/10 The 'Evaluation Techniques' module is one of the core modules taught on the Masters in Public Health which is offered by the Division of Epidemiology and Public Health at The University of Nottingham. This resource includes an overview of the module, a recommended reading list that supports the module and 3 of the 7 lectures that are delivered. Suitable for study at Masters Level
Procedimentos metodol?gicos para simula??o computacional de ambientes hist?ricos [Methodological pro
This study aims to present a classification of methodological procedures for using computer programmes to simulate architectural historical heritage. Produced for a Master?s Degree dissertation in Architecture, the methodology was developed based on several analyses of applications, possibilities and restrictions, with the assistance of photogrammetric reconstruction and several computer-graphics programmes. The files generated enable production of animations recording the changes experienced by
Antiretroviral treatment programmes in Nepal: Problems and barriers.
The main aim of this study is to identify barriers and obstacles to providing and expanding ARV programmes in Nepal. Materials and methods: A qualitative approach consisting of in-depth interviews with three groups of stakeholders: policy makers, ARV service providers and ARV recipients were carried out. The transcripts were analysed using a thematic approach. Results: The estimated number of people in need was high compared with people currently receiving ARV in Nepal. With regards to the prope
Great Moments in Science: Light of Life 1
This Great Moments in Science radio transcript discusses the history of bioluminescence. It covers the first scientists to study bioluminescence, organisms capable of making light, biochemistry of the phenomena, and interesting stories. The audio version of this program can be downloaded and requires RealPlayer.

Internationalising the Curriculum: an annotated bibliography
This annotated bibliography comprises a selection of books, journal articles, conference papers and other resources on the subject of the internationalised curriculum. It has been compiled initially from a library of global sources originally brought together as part of the review of literature in the field, commissioned by the Higher Education Academy in 2006 (Caruana, V. and Spurling, N., 2007). This has been up-dated to include more recent work. The central criterion for selection of material
Understanding contemporary society
This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. This module introduces students to a range of approaches in social analysis. Through introductions to key concepts, theorists and research studies in the disciplines of sociology, cultural studies and social policy, students will be equipped with the skills necessary for more advanced study of contemporary society. Two routes to reading this module's contents are offered. Those who prefer to read on screen can navig
