Institute for Name-Studies

University of Nottingham

About the Institute

The Institute was inaugurated in December 2002. It strengthens the links between two strands of name-study that already existed in the University of Nottingham. The English Place-Name Society (EPNS), an independent learned society, has had its offices in the University since 1968. The Centre for English Name-Studies (CENS) was established in the School of English Studies in 1991. The Institute replaces CENS and houses the offices of the EPNS.

We currently have two major research projects supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Board: The Survey of English Place-Names and The Vocabulary of English Place-Names. Within the School of English Studies we also teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules, and are developing a Postgraduate Certificate in Name-Studies (Distance Learning) with the University of Sheffield. Through the Cameron Memorial Studentship, we are involved with the Whittlewood Project, a major investigation into settlement history in central England based at the University of Leicester.

An online, map-based reference resource, the Key to English Place-Names, is also under development.
