Student Feedback on Teaching and Modules

Office Hours

The opportunity to discuss your ideas directly with your module tutor is an integral part of your studies and can greatly enhance your knowledge and understanding of module material. All staff hold weekly office hours, which are posted on the notice board outside of the main office. Office hours use an appointment system where you sign up on tutors' doors for specific time slots.

Although the expectation is that most consultations will take place during teaching weeks, tutors may, in consideration of coursework and exam deadlines, hold some consultations during the revision and assessment periods.

We want to make sure that you have a chance to meet with your tutors individually, but sometimes timetable clashes are unavoidable. If you cannot make your tutor’s office hour because you have a lecture/seminar or because of work or family commitments, get in touch by email to arrange an alternative appointment at a mutually convenient time.

Feedback on Outlines and Drafts

All of your tutors will be happy to discuss your ideas with you and to provide the mode of guidance appropriate given the module and requirements for the task. To help you submit work that is produced to the best of your ability, tutors often provide feedback on outlines and/or extracts of draft work.

Here are a couple of general rules of thumb you can keep in mind, though remember that these may vary slightly from module to module:

  • an outline is usually a single side of A4 typed in 12 point font
  • draft work will normally not be more than 25% of the overall word-limit
  • draft work can consist either of continuous prose or of selected extracts from a larger piece of work
  • most feedback will be provided during face-to-face consultations
  • feedback and consultations are not normally provided during vacation periods
  • you should not seek guidance for the same piece of coursework from multiple tutors

If you are unsure about arrangements for a specific module, please do ask your tutor.

Feedback on Assessed Work

You will receive feedback on all assessed work.

For exams, you are invited to discuss your results with module convenors during time specially set aside for this purpose (see Feedback Days below).

Feedback on coursework will be provided on the coversheet or by audio or video file. You are encouraged to discuss your performance on coursework with your personal tutor on Feedback Day (see below) and with the tutor who marked your work during their office hours.

Receiving your results isn’t the end of the story as far as feedback is concerned. One way to improve performance on subsequent assessment is to discuss coursework from previous modules with current module tutors in order to receive advice on how the feedback on earlier assessed work can contribute to the planning and execution of upcoming assignments.

Feedback Days

The School of English holds Feedback Days and Exam feedback sessions at the end of each semester (see Important Dates for details). An appointment to see your Personal Tutor should normally be made through ePARs .

On each Feedback Day, you should collect from the English corridor coversheets for your assessed work which contain the comments from the marker(s) on each module. You can then meet with your Personal Tutor to receive your marks for the semester / year and discuss your performance in English Studies

During Exam Feedback Sessions, you will be able to look at your exam script and receive exam feedback from your module convenors. Times and locations for the various modules will be posted up in the English Studies Corridor a couple of weeks before.

In addition, where a module has an examination, the module convenor will post up on the module notice board a general report on performance in the examination, indicating strengths and weaknesses across the whole class.

Student Feedback on Teaching and Modules

Formal evaluation questionnaires on teaching and modules will be handed out at various times throughout your course. These give you the opportunity to express your opinions about the content of a module and the way it has been taught, so do fill them in as thoughtfully as you can. The feedback you give is important for helping academic staff to reflect on the quality of their teaching and make changes and improvements where appropriate. However, please note that any malicious or insensitive comments will be disregarded. Our modules and teaching methods are kept under continuous review by the School’s Teaching Committee, and comprehensive student feedback is an essential element in this process. Students are informed of changes made in response to such feedback, either by the individual member of staff concerned, or via the Learning Community Forum. Staff responses to module feedback will be available below each semester.
