Site Context

The Grange is situated in the town of Market Harborough, which is in South Leicestershire. The site was formerly a Mushroom Farm, owned by Middleton Mushrooms Ltd, before the company folded in 2002, leaving the site open for development. Barratt Homes bought the site but had to wait 2 years before being granted planning permission. The site is reached via an access road off Great Bowden Road. It is surrounded by residential properties on three sides and an industrial estate straddles the South West side. It is near the train station and the town centre.

Site Organisation

The developers are Barratt Homes, who have divided the site into 50 plots of two, three and four bedroomed houses as well as an apartment block containing 26 two bedroomed apartments.

At the time of my site visits, the construction was at an early stage, with construction being between the setting out stage, and the first floor. A majority of materials were stored in a designated area surrounded by a fence for security, whereas other more important materials and equipment were stored in large crates walk-in containers.

This ensured security, and protection against the elements. Access to the site through the access road had metal fences to keep intruders off. In the centre of the site were the main facilities for workers including a staff room, toilets and the site managers office.

Safety

Any person entering the site must wear the appropriate personal protection. This includes safety shoes, a luminous jacket and a hard hat. Workers must also wear any protective equipment clothing depending on the job being done.
