Tasks:
Example tasks

Here we provide some examples of the kinds of task that students are asked to tackle in performance assessment. Many people find such tasks are one of the clearest ways of communicating what the reforms in mathematics education are about.

Balanced Assessment

Balanced Assessment packages are published by Dale Seymour Publications. Some sample tasks appear at the bottom of this page.

Sample - Middle School Level (55K)
Sample - High School Level (68K)

FLAG

FLAG is a 'Field Tested Learning and Assessment Guide' designed to support new forms of teaching and assessment in freshman science, mathematics, engineering and technology. The resources may be download to support teaching.

Sample Balanced Assessment tasks:

Grade 4

Grade 8

Grade 10

Grade 12

For each task, we provide a brief version - a 'prompt', giving the essence of the task. Usually there is a link to the full version, including:

  • task overview,
  • task prompt, as developed for students,
  • sample solution,
  • handling in the classroom,
  • characteristic levels of performance,
  • student work with commentary.
These examples will change from time to time. For a fuller set of examples we suggest you look at the Balanced Assessment Packages, published by Dale Seymour Publications.

An important part of the MARS work is the construction of a database of assessment tasks.
