Balanced Assessment Project: Michigan State - Berkeley - Shell Center

Task Database

An important part of the MARS work is the construction of a database of assessment tasks. This database supports our research, helps our work with clients, and also provides a theoretical framework for understanding the dimensions along which tasks vary.

When complete, the database will hold details of more than a thousand mathematical assessment tasks, some written by the Balanced Assessment project and MARS, some by other groups. The database places equal importance on classifying content skills and process skills, as well as describing tasks in a great many other ways in order to capture as complete a picture as possible. It is an important tool in creating a fully balanced package of tasks - rather than one that it is just balanced in terms of curriculum content.

As the project develops we plan to report here more details including some examples of the way the database is being used.
