Fractions of a Square

The large outer square represents 1 whole unit. It has been partitioned into pieces. Each piece is identified with a letter.

1. Decide what fraction of the whole square each piece is and write it on the shape.

2. Explain how you know the fractional name for each of the following pieces.

3. Which piece or collection of pieces from the square on the first page will give you an amount close to:

a) 1/5 ?


 
 

b) 2/3 ?


 
 

4 a) Design your own fraction square using the square below. Your square must contain at least 4 differently sized fractional pieces, other than 1/2. At least two of your fractional pieces have to be a different size than what is in the original square (used for problems 1, 2, and 3 ).
