Food Systems Learning Support Specialist, Faculty of Science



Kerina is the Food Systems Learning-Support Specialist for the Micronutrient Action Policy Support (MAPS) project.

She obtained her first degree (hons) in Nutrition, Physiology and Biochemistry. After completing her M.Med.Sci., where she explored socio-economic differences in nutritional and anthropometric status of urban schoolchildren in Malawi, Kerina worked as a Research Nutritionist on the EPIC-Norfolk Study of cancer based at the University of Cambridge; as a Diet and Nutrition Surveys Scientific Officer for the Food Standards Agency, and as a voluntary Food Labeling and Marketing Project Assistant at Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming.

Kerina joined the Dental Public Health Group of University College London as a Research Fellow assessing the effect of peer support on infant feeding practices within a low-income population. She then provided quantitative analysis for the annual Health Survey for England reports in the UCL Health and Social Surveys Research Group. Kerina returned to Cambridge as a Project Co-coordinator at the MRC Elsie Widdowson Laboratory. Since then, she has been a NHS public health information analyst, and a Public Health England health insights behaviour researcher. Kerina has also worked overseas in Belgium, Switzerland and Thailand in various health policy research, teaching, and editorial roles. More recently, Kerina was Deputy Editor of a daily online food and nutrition publication.

At the Universty of Leeds, she produced rapid research reviews for the Knowledge for Development (K4D) 'Help-desk' for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advisors, to support their policy and programme work. She also worked with the School of Dentistry on an oral health intervention for children, and investigated how Socially INClusive sustainable Urban developments are in Nigeria and Vietnam, including access to healthcare and nutrition/food security.
