Teaching Summary

In the 18/19 and 19/20 academic years, I have taught as a seminar tutor on the first year undergraduate 'Language & Linguistics' (formerly 'Language and Context') module in the School of English.

I was awarded a Postgraduate Teaching Award, as part of the University of Nottingham's Tri-Campus Awards, for my teaching work during the 19/20 academic year.

Research Summary

Current Status

PhD (full-time) - currently registered.

Research Topic

Psycholinguistics/Sociolinguistics, specifically taboo language processing and the linguistic reclamation of LGBTQ+ slurs.

Research Summary

I am currently researching the impact of 'linguistic reclamation' - non-derogatory uses by members of marginalised communities of the slurs which target them (Bianchi, 2014) - on the cognitive processing of taboo and offensive language. I am using a combination of online surveys, lexical decision tasks, free recall tasks and eye-tracking experiments to investigate whether or not reclamation causes differences in word memorability and lexical access, compared to taboo language that is not subject to this process. My research focuses on the LGBTQ+ community, as it is a community to which I myself belong, and it is the target of an extensive vocabulary of slurs, a number of which are the subjects of reclamation projects.

I hope that my research can provide new evidence about the emotional and unconscious effects of linguistic reclamation, and introduce the issue of linguistic reclamation to the literature on taboo language processing. I also hope that it can contribute to broader social debates and language policy decisions surrounding the reclamation of slurs, particularly concerning the way in which they are experienced and responded to.
