Research Topic Encountering the Other Space in the Works of Early Nineteenth Century Women Writers

Research Summary This thesis investigates the forms in which women writers in the early nineteenth century convey their views on constructions of national, gender, or social identities, economic and political concerns through the lens of the Other space.

This project focuses on four women writers in the early nineteenth century including Charlotte Brontë, Jane Austen, Sydney Owenson and Mary Shelley whose writings contain multiple examples of heterotopias- the Other spaces-which differ and challenge the dominant 'Real' space. These texts also involve travelers' encounters with the Other space under different scenarios: British travelers roaming in Ireland; British travelers venturing beyond the British Isles; and visitors from one nation to another sojourning within Great Britain. This thesis examines a wide scope of fictional geographies, reaching out to explore the spatial dynamics of power, identity, and knowledge.
